Emperors’ New ClothingThe 6th press conference of International Film Festival FEST 2010 went by quickly and hosted a distinguish member of the Festival Jury Macedonian Winterbottoms’ muse Labina Mitevska, that spoke about the regulations and criteria of the film jurist and about the importance of Art and European Film. No matter how hard is with film financing, the art house films will be shoot and it will be existing. The best films ever, are often shot with very little money, and even today they set the perfect example of a masterpiece.
The other part of a press conference took over and prevailed the attention with the discussion about Serbian documentary film „Washing Films“ directed by Serbian author Srdjan Knežević. If we talk about new period of freedom in a political life of Serbia today, I think that we need to reconsider the actual meaning of the word. In Knežević’s new independent production SrK doo, author points out at problems and affairs of Serbian cinematography nowadays. After the long discussion about serious lack of money for film productions in Serbia today, we are coming to a hidden subject that everyone avoid talking about. During the process of privatization of Avala Film Company, the biggest and most valued cinema company in present Serbia and ex Yugoslavia, with the money valid biggest studios and surrounding land couple years back was ruined by a bad privatization of Cinema Network Belgrade Film. Then lets talk about the sell of Dunav Film and especially the case of a Film Center of Serbia since its begins 2004. The film covers the opinion and comments of eminent Serbian filmmakers and film critic such as: Goran Paskaljević, Želimir Žilnik, Slobodan Šijan, Branislav Lečić, Božidar Zečević, Marina Đurašković, Ranko Petrić, Petar Volk, Radoslav Zelenović...
The subject of Serbian cinematography is overburden with obvious corruption and apparent money laundry, unprofessional „brothership relations“ based on a personal friendship and relations rather then professionalism when it comes to a money investments from the government budgets, given and shared on public competitions and politics enrollment through an interference of political parties. The film reveals some public affairs in last 10 years, that point out on a serious money laundering and public thefts. The film shows the actual existing documents and corporative contracts that prove the missing link and large amounts of money disappearing from the accounts, also newspaper clippings and alive testimonies of the most eminent filmmakers in Serbia. Knežević here deals with the real events that cover divisions of Serbian film cinematography in the last decade, also trying to find answers on some very odd actions of new government, involving the cutting down Institute for Film, now Film Center of Serbia, that others suspect it is meant to become a biggest house for money laundry. Also, the film brings up new directors coming from nowhere, people that nobody really know, the deliberate destructions of old Serbian films, the neglect toward Serbian national inheritance when it comes to a Serb cinematography, the suspicious relations with other ex Yugoslavian countries and supposedly investments in films from the region etc... "I am really grateful to a selector of FEST Miroljub Vučković and festival decision to show the film on this festival. No one else wanted to show the film, even journalist couldn’t write much about it or to deal with it properly. This is how all this is a hush hush... " said the author of film Knežević on the press conference.“I don’t want to attack anyone here, I just want something positive to change,“ stressed out Knežević to us. First two screenings of „Washing Films“ involved prosecutors of the court case relating the subject, to find the strategy and material for further action, but non of them actually showed up on a journalist screenings.
