Born in New York in 1952, Rourke's teenage years were more aimed towards sports than acting. He took up self-defense training at the Boys Club of Miami, where he learned boxing skills and decided on an amateur career. His boxing career resulted in severe facial injuries which required a number of operations to repair his damaged face. He was also nominated for Best Actor, as well. “When I read the story and then met Darren Aronofsky I knew he was going to make me go to some dark places and it would be painful emotionally and physically. But I'm so glad I did it because it is the best work I've done in the best film of my career.”

The 56-year-old star suffered a wide range of injuries while in the ring, but admits the cuts and bruises were nothing compared to one little-known side effect of the sport he took on in life.
