Somewhere Between an emotion documentary

Somewhere Between a
very emotional documentary at LAFF

By Ron Gilbert

Director Linda Goldstein Knowlton has created a very touching
and personal film about four adopted girls from China. It seems that China has
a One Child Policy and girls are usually placed up for adoption based on that
and of course other reasons like too many children in the household.

Knowlton knows the adoption procedure from the inside because
she also adopted a Chinese girl 5 years ago and as an incredible documentary
filmmaker she takes us on this journey from different corners of the United
States where the young girls are growing up to  Chinese cities and villages.

The term that the young girls describe themselves is “Bananas”
white on the inside but yellow on the outside. Watching how these girls adjust
and deal with issues that face all teenagers is an important part of this film.

The parents who have adopted these children are very special
people and should be praised because they are a blessing dealing straight from
the heart. They are so helpful in their parenting and when the girls want to
know more about their Chinese families and their moms and the reasons why they
were rejected or adopted, the trips to China reveal answers.

The girls are so well adjusted which come from a solid
family life in the United States and appreciate the opportunities presented to
them and they take giant steps in their accomplishments.” How to fit in” is always
an issue for adolescents and the girls share their stories with us and allow us
to see their daily life and how they deal with it.

This documentary won the People’s Choice Awards at HotDocs
and is a must see for everyone .
