Martin Scorsese Masterclass in Cannes

Supercapitalist rocks Wall Street

Supercapitalist has a familiar plot line but Derek Ting (writer/producer )who stars in this film is Chinese and he explores a world that we have not seen in these Wall Street films. He immediately transfers this film from Wall Street to Hong Kong and I do not recollect any film doing that in the last few years. We all know that China has entered the capitalist world in a big way ,so here we are in this very hot and sexy world where money is the key to happiness.
I have been in this world and have an insider’s view of this very accurate picture directed by Simon Yin and the camera work by Derrick Fong is amazing.enriched by the musical score by Ben Robinson.
This film moves at a very rapid pace and your eyes are glued to the screen watching Derek Ting(Conor Lee) move into the international financial world and meet every hot chick you ever wanted to meet ,but when he meets Kathy Uyen(Natalie Wong) who is not only beautiful to watch ,but showcases her acting talent. She is a smart cookie and does not immediately fall for Derek ,but that can change as many relationships do.
The actors Kenneth Tang,Linus Roache ,Michael Park ,Darren E.Scott were perfectly cast in this film and have nuances which makes the story fulfill its purpose. The difference for me in making this film special is that it explores family and the real values in this world which we tend to forget. In one of the last scenes in this film Derek writes a note and passes it to Richard Ng(Donald Chang) ,the CEO of the company that is very involved in this conspiracy and tears came to my eyes and my girlfriend’s when we saw what he had written.
If this film had stars ,the budget would have huge but it holds its own and is better than Wall Street Never Sleeps and Margin Call, which were well acted and directed films ,because it is more personal and will rock your world.
Produced by Derek Ting, Joyce Yung, Keith Lau, Diana Footitt, Juyoung Park. Executive producers, J.A.H. Lee, James C. Chie, Phillip Yin, John C. Hsu. Directed by Simon Yin. Screenplay, Derek Ting, Yin; story, Ting, Young Cho.
With: Derek Ting, Linus Roache, Richard Ng, Kathy Uyen, Darren E. Scott, Lester Chan, Eugene Kang, Kenneth Tsang. (English, Cantonese dialogue)
Film opens Friday August 31 at Noho Laemmle Theatres on Lankershim Blvd,North Hollywood
