Martin Scorsese Masterclass in Cannes

Overview of the US business for the week of February 8th

Warner Bros.' The Little Things maintained its top spot from last week in a subdued weekend box office for Super Bowl weekend.   The R-Rated Neo-Noir Crime Thriller starring Denzel Washington, Rami Malek and Jared Leto grossed $2.1M this weekend, for a 10-day North American cume of $7.8M.  Universal's The Croods: A New Age racked up another $1.76M in its eleventh week in theatres, and now tallies a North American cume of $46M. The Liam Neeson starrer The Marksman from Open Road/Briarcliff took third place in its fourth weekend with an estimated $1M in ticket sales.

We feature two BOX OFFICE BUZZ videos this week, highlighting the key nominees announced last week for this year's Golden Globe Awards and Screen Actors Guild Awards. This Hollywood Report column discusses how the nominations and eventual winners at the GG and SAG Awards may influence Academy voters when it comes time for the Oscars.

Our Industry News Summary begins with a look at the Super Bowl ads we can expect from studios this year. With theatrical releasing still mired in the COVID-19 waiting game, this year's focus may turn to streaming services and the films - and TV series - they will showcase over the next half year. We highlight an article that wraps up the 2021 Sundance Film Festival, virtual edition, and several reviews of the Golden Globes and SAG Awards nominees.

Gower Street counts up the worldwide $1 Billion box office month experienced in January 2021, which was down only slightly from the $1.1 Billion in December 2020. Note that fully one half of that amount came in from China, which posted $500M in January ticket sales. While it's not getting worse out there, it's also not yet getting much better. All eyes are now on the momentum that is building in the rollout of the vaccine.

We conclude with our regular film data tables. The Studio Release Calendar provides details on film releases through April 1st, followed by a list of the most recent studio release changes, MPAA film ratings announcements and the most important new trailers released last week.

Screendollars helps exhibitors stay informed about the schedule of Hollywood film releases, important industry news and how to maximize earnings from in-theater advertising. We encourage exhibitors to contact us to learn more about Screendollars in-theater advertising and marketing programs.
