Martin Scorsese Masterclass in Cannes

Overview of the US business for the week of November 9

For the second week in a row, Focus Features led the box office with a new film premiere.  This weeks opener was the crime thriller Let Him Go starring Kevin Costner and Diane Lane, which brought in $4.1M while playing at 2,454 locations across North America. It is the first #1 performance for a film featuring Diane Lane in a leading role, and the first back-to-back #1 performances for Focus Features in its history.  Last week's #1 Come Play dropped into second place this week, earning an additional $1.7M for the weekend and a $5.7M cume after 10 days.

Our Popcorn Previews Boxoffice Buzz video looks at the TOP STARS IN UPCOMING EVENT FILMS which will bring moviegoers back to theatres

In our Industry News Summary, we run through the numbers reported last week from Q3 earnings announcements of leading US exhibitors.  While results from the most recent period are ugly, exhibitors are projecting confidence in a strong recovery for the sector as soon as the COVID-crisis subsides.

Gower Street's analysts break down global box office results from October, which show some promising signs of recovery, especially in China and Japan where the coronavirus has been tamed.  It seems likely that November will bring more struggles for exhibitors in North America and Europe, as a result of rising infection rates and a lack of major studio titles to entice moviegoers back to theatres.    On the bright side, one upcoming release drawing attention is Universal/Dreamwork's animated comedy The Croods 2, coming to theatres this Thanksgiving on 11/25.

We conclude with our regular film data tables. The Weekly Film Calendar provides details on film releases through New Year's Day.  We report on last week's studio release changes, MPAA film ratings and important new trailers.
