MAMIFERA Wins SXSW Special Jury Award For Best Performance

MAMIFERA Wins SXSW Special Jury Award For Best Performance

Mamifera has won the Special Jury Award at SXSW for Maria Rodríguez Soto’s performance. The film is directed by Liliana Torres whose previous credits include Family Tour (San Sebastián International Film Festival premiere) and What Went Wrong? (which had its premiere in the Official Selection of PöFF - at Tallinn Black Nights). Mamifera is her third feature film, which closes the autobiographical trilogy she began with her two previous works. In the first two, she reflected on themes like family and couples, respectively, and in this last one, she focuses on motherhood and the choices that women make regarding their bodies.  The film resonated with Austin audiences as it deals with topics such as abortion in a state where reproductive rights are constantly challenged.

Mamifera follows Lola, who has always been clear that being a mother is not for her, until an unexpected pregnancy revolutionizes all her plans. During the three days she is forced to wait for her appointment at an abortion clinic, she feels challenged by social expectations and faces her inner fears.

Starring Maria Rodríguez Soto, Enric Auquer, Ruth Llopis, Anna Alarcón and Ann Perelló. Produced by Carla Sospedra Salvadó, Miriam Porté of Distino Films and Gerard Marginedas. Co-produced by Edna Cinema.  The film is set to release in Spain on April 26, 2024.

Torres said of the SXSW recognition: “This award means a lot to our film, having our world premiere at SXSW allowed us to make sure the film’s impact resonated in both the industry and with public audiences, who have engaged in meaningful and substantial ways. It has been so wonderful to see the reaction from the press and public. We could not have dreamed of a better premiere and warm welcome.  This film was made to encourage all of us to dispel the myths and narrow concepts of “perfect motherhood” and the condemnatory notion that childfree women are selfish.  Let's change that narrative, to a place of power and control of our rights. ”
