LOOKING BACK! Cinema's greatest moments...
For all of us die-hard cinephiles getting our daily fix on recent film news and festival features, I want us to remember that we would never be where we are now with film if it weren't for those praiseworthy pillars of unforgettable cinema that are our forebears. So, I want to begin a weekly 'LOOKING BACK: CINEMA'S GREATEST MOMENTS' piece on my blog, starting today (Columbus Day), Wednesday, October 12, 2011.
Every week I will post what I think is a great unforgettable cinematic moment. As it is Columbus Day indeed, how fitting that the film moment most pressing in my memory is a scene from Roland Joffe's THE MISSION (1986).
FORGIVENESS AND MERCY... After finding his brother in bed with the woman he loves, jealous Rodrigo (Robert De Niro) kills his brother Felipe (Adrian Quinn). Filled with remorse and unable to forgive himself, he nearly commits suicide with self-chastisement. It takes the noble natives to pardon him when he himself cannot.
