SHALLOW WATER (USA) Dir. Mathew Robinson
Apr 23, 2022 1:00 PM - Cinemark Memorial City
Having graduated from college, seven friends celebrate their last moments of freedom at a lake house. As they drink and use drugs, they discuss their aspirations -- from being doctors and tech entrepreneurs to writers and photographers. Over the next five years, everyone becomes fully immersed in their busy adult lives, dealing with new relationships and new responsibilities. As time passes, their substance abuse and friendships, once fun and carefree, look more dangerous for some, and each person carries secrets they no longer feel comfortable sharing. Ultimately, they must confront the aftermath of decisions made.

Based on the novella The White Ship, by Kyrgyz writer Chingiz Aitmatov, Shambala tells the story of a lonely, impressionable seven-year-old boy who lives in a protected forest, high in the mountains, with his grandfather, step-grandmother, auntie and uncle. He spends his time exploring and listening to legends from his grandfather, in particular, tales about the sacred Mother Deer. The world of myths and folklore eventually conflict with the harsh reality of the world of adults, who are faced with their own personal problems and dilemmas.
