user
Generation "П" (GENERATION P, 2011) held its world premier this week at the 23rd Palm Springs International Film Festival, 2012. Based on the book by Russian writer Victor Pelevin, the film is directed by American/Russian director Victor Ginzburg. The film is about Babylen Tatarsky, a copywriter for a major advertising company in the late 90’s in Post-Soviet Russia. Babylen is put to the test by the advertising firm to find the 'new Russian identity'. Well, what se...

Calling all documentary filmmakers! Sundance funding proposals are due Feb. 9, 2012

user
Here’s a great opportunity for documentary filmmakers. The Sundance Documentary Fund supports documentary films from around the world that focus on current human rights issues, freedom of expression, social justice, civil liberties, and critical issues of our time. The fund wants to encourage the diverse exchange of ideas crucial to developing an open society, raise public consciousness about human rights abuses and restrictions of civil liberties, and foster an ongoing dialogu...

LOOKING BACK, Cinema's greatest moments...

APOCALYPTO While bringing in the New Year in Mayan Mexico, how can I not think of this extraordinary film APOCALYPTO (2006) by Mel Gibson that gives cinematic verisimilitude a new meaning… Not only are they speaking ancient Yucatan Mayan!... but seriously, this film takes us hundreds of years back to pre-Columbian Meso-America. Gibson creates true cinema remarkably achieved, transporting us to this ancient world and its collective myth psychology. In this arresting scene, ...

Happy Holidays

user
There isn't much going on this time of the year. That is a good thing because it provides time to get existing projects finished or, at least, better organized. In addition, I'm working on two feature scripts and two short scripts. Have a happy holiday and may 2012 exceed your wildest expectations. Thank you for your support, Jim Hawk ...

The BUFF Blog (December 2011)

user
In keeping with the tradition of listening to a rather powerful woman just before you’re about to embark on what’s really important – or maybe you’ve already squashed Christmas lunch by the time your attention is perhaps swayed by a certain Elizabeth Windsor – its’ time we took note of another Christmas message – the one being brought to you by another powerful woman (Sheila Nortley) who is fast becoming a regular fixture on the urban independent film circuit. And before we hear ...

Tribute To Jacques Tati at Belgrade’s Author Film Festival

user
Belgrade’s Author Film Festival hosted Dominique Abel and Fiona Gordon and gave a couple of screenings of The Fairy (La Fee) to a festival audience, including the screening of their previous film Rumba. The actually amazing Belgian based filmmaking trio Dominique Abel, Fiona Gordon and Bruno Romy are back with their second (actually third) old school approach film The Fairy (La Fee). Even if the film is firmly grounded in dedication to the artwork of Keaton or Charlie Chaplin, authors here g...

9th IN THE PALACE '2011 Poster

Official poster of the 9th IN THE PALACE International Short Film Festival, Balchik, Bulgaria, 2011

Who will tell me?

user
You can probably remember many famous filmmakers stating that they make films for people and in an age where we have filmmaking saturation, how can you know if your film is worthy of an audience? You will doubtless feel its the best film ever made but only when its been screened in front of a ticket paying audience (who can demand their money back) will you know if your film has a market. I would love to see more sites dedicated to spotting emerging talent, run by people who can judge imp...

Call for Entries: 2012 DC Shorts Film Festival and Screenwriting Competitions

user
DC Shorts showcases the largest audience-driven collection of short films in the USA.  Now in our 9th year, we expect hundreds of filmmakers and thousands of audience members mix, mingle and explore the world of short cinema. DC Shorts is unique among film festivals, as we entries to read the feedback and scores from the judging panels — a point which impressed MovieMaker Magazine to name us as “one of 20 festivals worth an entry fee,” and “one of the leading film festivals” ...

Size Matters

user
Human nature is one of those things that everybody talks about but no one can define. Human behavior is a product both of our innate human nature and of our individual experience and surrounding environment or culture.  Our preference for certain type or a size is an evolved psychological mechanism, it is something that we do not consciously choose; but it may feel as such a good subject to talk about. Do you know the situation at crowded movie in theatre, at the beginning of screening, wh...

Tyrannosaur Honest and Powerful

user
Author Film Festival FAF 2011 offered very different a high quality films. And for start I would like to write about Tyrannosaur by Paddy Considine film that ended with several awards on festival. At a very least, what we can expect from downbeat art film is to be distinctive and most of all, honest. All authors who may have made money with their film are well advised to focus on some sort of  happy notes in their films as a relentless mechanical proves that film will hit a theatre boxes. S...
