purgatory / noun / an intermediate place or state
of temporary suffering for expiatory purification
Within the word “purgatory”, it is easy to envision condemned souls, torment and darkness. However, purgatory may also reflect the cyclic state in which we often rediscover or recreate ourselves anew from within our personal inflictions. Sometimes it is the necessary stage to exorcise ourselves from the haunting ghosts of the past. Perhaps it is the serene place of self reflection and realization.
From within this, DAMNED proudly presents an exhibition of powerful cinema called Purgatory. Held on March 8th & 9th 2013 at the Tangent Gallery in Detroit, Purgatory will present various short films of deeply introspective, beautifully disturbing and darkly enlightening subject matters from filmmakers local and worldwide. This is not an industry-focused horror film festival, but a tributary showcase of the often redemptive films from the filmmaker’s personal damnations. (The full film schedule is listed further below)

The automobile industry jumpstarted Detroit’s rise and made it the most industrialized city in the United States. But because of changes in American society and population demographics, the city lay deserted for decades and urban prairies complete with falcon, deer and coyote turning out the urban landscape in a B movie setting. Now an unexpected turn of events has created an environment where young people are moving back into the ruins of the former Detroit... are they a new kind of pioneer? Could this now be a way for America to be “rediscovered”?

Based on a true story of a handicapped woman ( Story of Hope,Inspiration and Courage)
Neha Bhatia, free-spirited and fun-loving who takes life for granted ends up a victim of a fatal accident, leaving her with a severe brain stem injury resulting in quadri-paralysis and comatose. Thus begins the journey of Neha?s recovery, unexpected but not impossible. A journey that explores unconditional love and support from Ayesha, Neha's older sister. Ayesha?s immense belief in her sister and undying faith in their sisterly bond becomes the spine of the film. Neha eventually sheds her inhibitions of insecurities and becomes an inspiration to other people through her independence. Sometimes even the eyes that see may not have the vision to inspire or be inspired ? it unfortunately takes a tragic happening to realise that life is not to be taken for granted. That life is a blessing to be counted and appreciated everyday and to be celebrated with unconditional love.

This was a very endearing press conference, especially in light of Lars Von Trier’s press conference two days prior for MELANCHOLY (2011) that still had everyone’s head spinning in Cannes. Von Trier’s comments on his Nazi sympathies as well as his protested desire to return to Denmark and focus only on soft and hardcore porn had everyone at Cannes thinking twice about Danish cinema and its praiseworthy art-house directors. Nicolas Winding Refn is a former student of Von Trier so naturally,...
