Melancholia Press Conference

Melancholia is the most recent movie by the Danish director Lars von Trier, starring Kirsten Dunst and Charlotte Gainsbourg. The film premiers at the Cannes Film Festival today, May 18.

At the press conference, director Lars von Trier used a funny but somewhat dark (and maybe inappropriate) attitude to answer different questions. When asked if he would consider making a comedy after directing so many melancholic movies, Lars cleverly stated that the problem is that most of his "melancholic" movies were intended to be comedy already, so it would be a bad idea for him to make a true melancholic film.

Lars was also questioned if he likes the movie since the visual of the film is so beautiful, he responded by saying he had fun making the film, but he felt that they got carried away by the visual and he is disappointed. He said that the movie might be "shit".

Lars also made a controversial comment about being Nazi (supposedly joking) and said "My family were German. And that also gave me some pleasure. What can I say? I understand Hitler...I sympathize with him a bit" and “I don't mean I'm in favor of World War II and I'm not against Jews, not even Susanne Bier"

When Lars was "ranting" on about being a Nazi, the actresses Kirsten Dunst and Charlotte Gainsbourg seem to feel quite awkward, next to Lars. Kirsten even whispered "oh my god, that's horrible!" into Lars' ears. "

Nazi comments aside, Lars and Kirsten gave a quite interesting press conference for the movie.
