About the Director:

Mathieu was born in 1974 in Toulouse, south of France. Since his early age he directed short cuts with his father’s video camera. He completed his first western film at the age of 8. After English studies in college he was graduated from the ESAV cinema school, and he worked as camera assistant on TV documentaries. In 1998 as he was working at the Cannes Film festival he met an executive from Sony Music who liked his short cuts and gave him a job as a music video director. Since then Mathieu directed clips for various french artists as Zazie, Sanseverino, KDD… He also directed commercials for Airbus, Alcatel, Bouygues Telecoms, ATR… Since 1998 he wrote and directed three short cuts (Gweilo, One more prayer for Remington, Giallo), with his Toulouse Connection friends, mainly genre films with B movie references. He also co-wrote a book about French B movies (“La Série B Française” PuF 2000). He wrote and directed two short cuts : “Under the surface” (an adventure feature film teaser starring Lance white Magpie from “Dances with wolves” and Mélanie Tran) and “Magic Kisa”, a French neo-whodunit with squeaking humour about twin brothers.

EfilmCritic... AUGUST 2009 by Charles Tatum "Brother Hoods"

This complex Tarantino-like noir short film is a treat to watch and recommend. Vic and Gino (both played by Christophe Laubion) are identical twins. Vic has just been released from prison after six years, and he tracks down family man Gino at Gino's bar. Gino should have gone to jail with Vic, both are con men, so Gino makes him an offer- Vic spends two weeks playing Gino, complete with sexy common-law wife Margot (Marie Vernalde) and nerdy son Castor (Philemon Renaud), and then all is even between them. What Gino fails to tell Vic is that he owes three million dollars to another set of identical twins known as the Gravediggers (both played by Dominique Bettenfeld), who see their enforcement by hacksaw as a task from God, and who like to peruse coffin catalogs in case they must bury one of their associates. Gino is seriously injured, and Vic begins to realize he may have got the raw end of this deal. First, a word about the technical aspects. Director Saliva does an absolutely flawless job of creating two sets of identical twins with one actor playing each set. The film's effect is brilliant, without calling attention to itself, and I was stunned to learn only one actor played two brothers. The musical score is fun and odd, another aspect that reminded me of Tarantino. Laubion is great as the shifty brothers. Marie Vernalde is also good as Gino's girl, and Philemon Renaud as the young son is excellent, especially when telling the story of his hitchhiking trip home from school. I could watch an entire film dedicated to the Gravedigger brothers. Their (his?)scenes are both creepy and humorous, with Bettenfeld doing an astounding job. I wholeheartedly enjoyed this mean little film (barely thirty minutes long). It could easily be expanded to a feature length film, and I would be one of the first seeking it out. http://efilmcritic.com/review.php?movie=19724&reviewer=325

OpenSalon... SEPT 09. The Subtle Magic of "Magic Kisa:" Movie Review By Dan Lybarger

Magic Kisa is a 30-minute French comedy-thriller that’s so clever that it takes a couple of viewings to appreciate what writer-director Mathieu Saliva has done. An ex-convict named Vic (Christophe Laubion) decides to play an unexpected visit on his brother Gino (played by Laubion without a moustache). Both were involved in the crime that sent Vic to the slammer, but Gino ended up with his own tavern, a live-in girlfriend named Margot (Marie Vernalde) and a son. When Vic tells Gino that he envies his older brother’s seemingly easy life, Gino offers to trade identities with him. Vic accepts the offer and quickly discovers that he was better off in prison. As Vic should have probably guessed, Gino isn’t as upright as he appears and has betrayed others the way he’s betrayed Vic. Gino owes a fortune to a couple of mob goons (both played by Dominique Bettenfeld, “La vie en rose”). These fellows remind deadbeats of their obligations by letting them know what sort of coffin they’ll provide if the money isn’t forthcoming. They promise get one that’s just a few centimeters too small. This means the borrower may get dismembered to fit. That’s actually the nicest thing these guys do. And now that Vic is literally in Gino’s shoes, he’s stuck with the large debt and a short deadline. Magic Kisa starts off bleak and gets darker as it goes on, but Saliva and his crew keep the film from sneaking into nihilism by loading the film with a satanic humor. The twin mobsters read through a catalog of caskets as if they were shopping for cars. Saliva also has some intriguing plot twists that jolt viewers the way they frustrate Vic. On a technical level, the film is astonishing because the filmmakers have figured out how to create dual characters for Laubion and Bettenfeld without drawing attention to the fact that each actor is playing two roles. Casting performers in multiple roles is as old as cinema itself (Buster Keaton played an entire theater in 1921’s The Play House), but Saliva and the other filmmakers come up with ingenious ways to make Laubion and Bettenfeld interact with their cinematic doppelgangers as if it were happening in real time. None of this would work if the actors weren’t up to the challenge. Take a close look at Laubion’s face during his domestic scenes with Vernalde, and you’ll catch a look of bewilderment as Vic discovers how complicated Gino’s life really is. With only 30 minutes, Saliva’s pacing is appropriately taut and brisk. Nonetheless, there’s more wit and imagination in this offering than in a lot of features.

http://open.salon.com/blog/lybarger/2009/09/09/the_subtle_magic_of_magic_kisa_movie_review
