Word comes from Europe that the celebrated director Roman Polanski will be returning to Zurich, Switzerland this week to accept the Lifetime Achievement Award from the Zurich Film Festival. This could have been a standard issue awards story except for the fact that Mr. Polanski’s trip to Zurich two years ago to pick up this same honor precipitated a one-year legal battle that led to months of house arrest and his possible extradition to the United States to face a prison term for fl...

While Alfred Hitchcock will forever be known as the "master of suspense", one of his true admirers, the director Brian De Palma, also shares the master's abiding interest and superb execution of the thriller genre. If anything, De Palma was able to be much more explicit in the depiction of violence and sexality than Hitchcock was able to do in the more buttoned-down decades of the 1950s and 1960s. In many ways, De Palma combines the classic elements of less-is-more film sus...

There is no doubt that John Lithgow is an accomplished serious actor who can never be too over the top for his own liking. Tuesday night was a rare opportunity to see him in a conversation with David Ansen, the new Artistic Director of LAFF. What was so special about this was that they were college roommates at Harvard and are still best friends. That gave David a unique insight and made it a more personal co...
It seems amazing, especially in the context of a film festival, that there might be a time in the not so distant future when young people will think of films as something they can download onto their mobile devices and view on their mini screens. Films as big screen events may never completely die, but clearly the trend towards miniaturization has made the wide screen epics of yesteryear seem quaintly anachronistic.
Well, as part of its 50th anniversary celebrations, th...

Locarno has a clear identity and a great tradition, since the early days it's been committed to discovering and revealing new filmmakers and new territories. That's an approach I've always been very keen on, too, and I intend to stick with it. Locarno is a major festival that gives a useful o...
