My Berlin Top Ten Films

user
At a film festival that totals more than 250 feature films (not to mention an additional 250 features in the accompanying European Film Market), one can only skim the surface of an event as wide-ranging as the Berlinale. Film choices are often based on schedule availability....grabbing a screening in between meetings or making sure one is awake to catch the early morning press screenings of the Competition program. In a sense, one only gets a random taste of the very far-flung program...

Berlinale Retrospective Ingmar Bergman

Retrospective Ingmar Bergman: Guests and Events Few film directors have worked as consistently over decades with the same team as Ingmar Bergman. With Harriet Andersson, Gunnel Lindblom and Liv Ullmann, three of Bergman's most outstanding actresses will not only present "their" films at the Berlinale, but also converse in detail publicly about life and work with Bergman for both the screen and the stage.   When Bergman cast the Norwegian actress Liv Ullmann in Persona (1965/66) becaus...

The Retrospective of the 61st Berlin International Film Festival will honour Swedish director Ingmar Bergman, who died in 2007. The cinematic oeuvre of this legendary filmmaker includes more than 60 works. Films such as The Silence (Tystnaden, 1962/63), Scenes from a Marriage (Scener ur ett äktenskap, 1972/73) and Fanny and Alexander (Fanny och Alexander, 1981/82 – which took home four Oscars) brought him international fame. He won nearly all of the world’s most prestigious film awards, inc...

Andrei Tarkovsky In The New York Spotlight

user
There are few filmmakers more controversial or more "difficult" for mainstream audiences to appreciate than the Russian existential master Andrei Tarkovsky. His films are indeed an acquired taste, but for those willing to take the complex cinematic journeys, there are many rewards to be had. A Tarkovsky fan is indeed a Tarkovsky fanatic, and the Film Society of Lincoln Center in New York provides both devoted fans and those new to this important oeuvre a rare opportunity to sample the master's h...

Goodbye Mr. B: Death Of A Film Giant

Tuesday, July 31-------It perhaps seemed improbable that one of the world's funniest filmmakers was a devoted acolyte of one of the world's most serious. But that was the case for Woody Allen, whose devotion to the Swedish filmmaker Ingmar Bergman was a life-long obsession. He often referenced the great director in his films. In ANNIE HALL, in a scene that all hardcore cinephiles can relate to, Woody refuses to go to a screening of Bergman's FACE TO FACE because he and Diane Keato...

Remembering A Master of Light

user
Thursday, January 11----2006 marked the final curtain for many film greats. But perhaps none of them was as influential, or as endearing to both professionals and the public, as the renowned Swedish cinematographer Sven Nykvist. Known as the “Master of Light”, Nykvist brought a shimmering yet subtle beauty to his filmed work, particularly his long and prolific collaboration with fellow Swedish film icon Ingmar Bergman....one of most glorious collaborations in film history. To salute the im...

It wasn’t shown first at Cannes or Venice this year, instead Saraband , Ingmar Bergman’s latest film made for television, premiered on SVT1 - Sveriges Television on December 1. Television is where the film will stay, as Bergman refuses to allow it to be shown in movie theaters in Sweden.
