20th Anniversary Philadelphia Film Festival Opens Tomorrow (10/20/2011)

user
20th Philadelphia Film Festival - Day 1 - 4 Picks I picked up my press pass for the 20th Anniversary Philadelphia Film Festival tonight! Just to get you in the festival mood, here's the films I plan to see the first few days (Thursday, October 20th thru Sunday October 23rd). Of course, the festival runs till November 3rd, and I plan to be present throughout most of it; however, during the festival, I'll be posting on facebook and twitter each day ...

In case you missed the South East European Film Festival in LA last May...

user
For those who didn’t see the 2011 South East European Film Festival (SEE FEST) last May, I thought I’d recap a few of my favorite films. Me, My Gypsy Family, and Woody Allen was a humorous and moving 2009 documentary about the Halilović family’s move from caravans into a permanent apartment, and the daughter Laura’s intent on being a filmmaker rather than getting married at 18, as her mother and relatives expected. Halilović’s family had lived in caravans in Italy sin...

Yo También

user
When writing reviews for film festival movies, there are a few adjectives I've learned I will probably drop from my vocabulary: heart-warming, light, sweet... They're good adjectives for other movies, to be sure, (if a bit overused at times), but they have no place here. Nope. No way. So when I saw Yo, También, I wasn't exactly sure how I planned to describe it, for that is what it is: heart-warming, light and sweet. It made me (and the rest of the audience) burst out laughing at...

Mariam's Amazing Race to Cannes and back to Cambodia: Day 18

user
DAY EIGHTEEN The day started early with a bowl of cereal, yogurt and fresh fruit. Then it was time to pack the purple carpet bag again and head off to another train station. Wynford drove me to the station, where the price for a train ticket had gone from $35 Pounds if I had purchased the ticket online the night before, to $69. Since my credit card wasn't working, we walked over to the National Express bus office where a ticket to London was a mere $23, which I had in cash. Howe...

Undeniably one of cinema’s master storytellers and an inspiration to generations of filmmakers, the Irish Film Institute is proud to announce a two-part retrospective of the work of David Lean. Interview with Juan Antonio Bayona - The Orphanage

user
"The Orphanage"/"El Orfanato"Guillermo Del Toro, the Oscar award winning director for "El Laberinto del Fauno" or "Pan's Labyrinth", produced this new spine-chilling dramatic thriller, "El Orfanato", or "The Orphanage", directed by Juan Antonio Bayona. Belen Rueda, who plays the leading female role, Laura, and Fernando Cayo, in the role of Carlos, her counterpart, return to the house Laura grew up in, to raise their chronically ill, orphaned son, Simon, played by Roger Princep. The Los Angeles Italian Film Awards here announce the Short-Films that have been selected for competition at LAIFAFEST 2004, in April 20 - 24 at the ArcLight Cinemas in Hollywood. This years selection was very tough.
