What makes a festival successful? Great films and great audiences, and Belgrade's 40th FEST had both in spades- indeed, the event was such a hit, it was extended by a day to accommodate a last-minute regional premiere for The Artist, fresh from its triumph at the Oscars in Hollywood(and in keeping with its immaculate organisation, there was even an advance press screening of the French 'surprise' gift to Belgrade's enormous audiences.
For the event is centred in what must be one of...

It was a gloriously sunny day but there was a capacity crowd in the East Chapel in Golders Green Crematorium, in north London, for the Celebration of your life, Virginia Dignam, sometime actress, published poetess, film reviewer on The Morning Star, and long-serving hard-working Honorary Secretary of the UK Critics' Circle("a shrivel of critics" you used to call us, in your pert and often impertinent way).It would have been your 87th birthday, but you'd left us, after a sudden, sh...
Both Ingmar Bergman and Orson Welles called him their favorite director. On set, John Wayne called him “Coach”. Jimmy Stewart referred to him simply as “Boss”. In a career that spanned over 60 years, few directors have rivaled John Ford in terms of creative output, popular success, critical acclaim or overall influence on the craft of cinema. And from June 7th to 10th, Ford fans and scholars will converge on Dublin for the inaugural John Ford Ireland Film Symposium, organized by the Iris...
Tucaković reconstructs his story, yet not much as it is known, as chapter of Ray Nicholas´ life.
The film is quite diverse and eclectic: there are poetic sequences that evoke old Nicholas’ movies, which is in general more or less cinematic poetics. Central subject is the arrival of Ray in Belgrade at the beginning of 60s, and the ambition of Yougoslav communist leader Dražević to make his own communist Hollywood and get hold of Oscar Award for the film done by Nicholas....

The B Movie Celebration : September 23rd to 25th Franklin Indiana
www.bmoviecelebration.com
it's time for the 5th Annual B-Movie Celebration in Franklin, Indiana. It’s time once again to gather and pay tribute to B-Movies past, present and future. As we all know, the B-Movie has had a long and humble tradition beginning with the double features of the 1930s and 40s where a lower-budget production would be used to fill the bottom half of a double bill. Within that time, there we...

Another trophy guest of the L.A. fest was 84 year old Roger Corman, producer, director, writer, actor, promoter, distributor, and living legend of B-and-Below kitsch/trash movies -- as part of the "Conversations with Hollywood Celebrities" sidebar, which has been one of the highlights of the current L.A. Int'l Film Festival. To start with, let us say that Roger does not look a day over seventy-four, and was greeted upon arrival on stage by a most respectful whole-room-standing-up ovation which h...

Palm Springs International Film Festival (PSIFF) will present four-time Academy Award nominee Jeff Bridges with the Desert Palm Achievement Award on Tuesday, January 5 at the Palm Springs Convention Center.
Jeff Bridges stars as Bad Blake a broken-down, hard-living country music singer who’s had way too many marriages, far too many years on the road and one too many drinks way too many times. Bridges creates yet another richly comic, semi-tragic romant...
Director: Wieland Schulz-Keil, Dan Tang.
The film consist of four portraits of Peking opera performers, two adults and two children. It presents a subtle picture of the present cultural-political climate in China. Peking Opera often seems puzzling and out of place, even in China. Its style is the opposite of naturalism: It is perfectly possible that young girls play elderly generals, or that a young male actor performs the heroine's sword dance from "Farewell my Concubine." The radical artificiality of Peking Opera has often met resistance. During the Cultural Revolution of the 60s and 70s, it was considered decadent and was outlawed. Today it seems hopelessly old-fashioned compared to the new currents of popular culture. -- While visiting a Peking Opera school the filmmakers met a number of teachers and pupils who are working hard and with admirable devotion to keep their highly refined music and dance theatre alive. The theatre people not only taught them about their century old Chinese art form, but also about their lives in the midst of a mostly imported new culture.
The names Leslie and Willie a.k.a László Kovács and Vilmos Zsigmond must certainly ring a bell to anyone familiar with the world of cinema. On March 14, 2009, the American Film Institute hosted a special screening of “No Subtitles Necessary: Laszlo & Vilmos”, a documentary by James Chressanthis about the lives and works of Kovács and Zsigmond. Vilmos Zsigmond and the late László Kovács are two of the most influential contemporary cinematographers considered to be instrumental in the d...

There are many great things about the Cannes Film Festival: the movies, the premieres, the celebrities, the parties etc. However there's one part of the festival that doesn't get as much attention as it should (even though that's most likely a good thing). It's called Cinema de la Plage, meaning Cinema of the Beach. On the Croisette, amongst Cannes' busy nightlife, is a spot where those who would like to get away from the bustling crowds can relax and watch a movie on the beach. The set up co...

In the column next to the winner of each award are the other nominees for best director. Following the Academy's practice, the films below are listed by the years of their Los Angeles qualifying run, which is usually (but not always) in the year of release; for example, the Oscar for Best Director of 1999 was announced during the award cerem...
Wednesday, October 3--------The New York Film Festival is, if nothing else, loyal to its cinema masters. Hell, it practically invented them. For the past 45 years, the Festival has been as influential as any in introducing and sustaining interest in some of the world's most celebrated filmmakers. While some other festivals focus almost exclusively on emerging talents (and they certainly are well represented at this year's NYFF as well), few other film events of this stature continue to pay hom...

Wednesday, September 5--------While high potency celebrities making their way on the red carpet capture the bulk of media attention here (hey Brad, take off those sun glasses, we want to see your fabulous face.....), the Festival has assembled a group of true cinema greats for a program it calls DIALOGUES: Talking With Pictures. This is the rare opportunity for film buffs (comme moi) to hear from some of the most illustrious names of the past half century in film in an intimate setting. This is ...
