Yet 3-D hasn’t been the biggest sea change in recent memory, no, the biggest change in the industry has been a long time coming and became very obvious recently, Digital. Movies shot digitally and a good majority of theaters switching over to Digital projectors, we are seeing the onset of the truest...

Ryan Gosling, the nova hot actor, is a native Canadian and the biggest film festival in his country is indulging in a bit of Gosling-fever. The actor, who grew up in southern Ontario, appears in two high profile films at the Toronto International Film Festival, which opens on September 8. THE IDES OF MARCH, a behind-the-scenes political thriller directed by George Clooney, gives its biggest role to Gosling’s young press secretary, who does all things legal and illegal to protect the...

This was a very endearing press conference, especially in light of Lars Von Trier’s press conference two days prior for MELANCHOLY (2011) that still had everyone’s head spinning in Cannes. Von Trier’s comments on his Nazi sympathies as well as his protested desire to return to Denmark and focus only on soft and hardcore porn had everyone at Cannes thinking twice about Danish cinema and its praiseworthy art-house directors. Nicolas Winding Refn is a former student of Von Trier so naturally,...

CANNES, France - The Cannes film festival got a shot of high-octane
drama on Friday with "Drive," a violent film-noir thriller set in Los
Angeles, rich in Detroit iron and inspired in part by the Brothers
Grimm. Canadian actor Ryan Gosling stars in Danish auteur Nicolas
Winding Refn's tale of a solitary Hollywood stunt-car driver and
part-time wheelman for armed robbers who morphs into a cold...
Since BARDSONGS (2010) screened in Palm Springs this past PSIFF 2011, I’ve been speaking to director Sander Francken about doing an interview about what I thought was an extremely intriguing subject for a film, that of oral storytelling in a time where storytelling has changed so much that the old modes have long since departed us. Or have they? Sander’s film is a tribute to oral storytelling and ‘bardsongs’. I tracked him down in Copenhagen at CPHPIX 2011 where his film screened and we ...
AFM Day 4-5: Adrien Brody's WRECKED Sells, Where Not to Film, Mini-Moguls Speakby Quendrith Johnson, Los Angeles Correspondent "Expected to be released in theatres in 2011" might be the most ominous phrase coming out of the 31st American Film Market, which closes on Nov. 10. It's the expectations of buyers and sellers that indicate we're in a worldwide down economy, with many expecting the worst. Not so if you are Adrien Brody, steeped in Oscar potential; and even if your film is WRECKED, som...
The L.A. Film Festival Directors have set the scene. And the Film Independent press conference today announced action.
