Gary Lucas sells out the Silent Movie Theatre in Hollywood with "The Golem"!!

user
Just back from a wonderful trip to LA where I SOLD OUT the fantastic Silent Movie Theatre on Fairfax Ave. in Hollywood with "The Golem"--my live solo guita score accompanying this classic 1920 German horror film! Just check this review from Debra Levine in ARTS MEME: Grammy-nominated Gary Lucas, whom Rolling Stone calls “one of the best and most original guitarists in America,” performed his well-traveled and exceedingly harrowing  score to “Der Golem,” the brill...

Gary Lucas Plays "The Golem" (1920) -- Gary Lucas accompanies the film live with his original solo guitar score

Director: Paul Wegener and Carl Boese.
I have performed with this classic horror/fantasy film--the best version of the Golem legend ever made--in our 20 countries round the world since debuting my live score (in collaboration with composer Walter Horn) at the Museum of th Moving Image in Astoria NY in 1989. The film concerns the actual historical Rabbi Jehudah Loew, who Jewish legend has it fashioned a man out of clay and brought him to life through cabbalistic magic to protect the Jewish Community of 16th century Prague from annihilation. A stunningly beautiful, little seen film!

Silent about Legendary Czech Creature and Rabbi LOW Shows at Pordenone with original music

The film [programme note by Kristin Thompson] Der Golem is a classic film – doubly so. First, it has long nestled comfortably within the list of titles that make up the German Expressionist movement of the 1920s. Teachers of survey history courses are more likely to show Das Cabinet des Dr. Caligari, but a serious enthusiast will make a point of seeing Der Golem as well. From the start, reviewers recognized Der Golem as Expressionist. In 1921 the New York Times’ critic wrote, “Resembl...

Kino Classics: The Best Of World Cinema

Friday, June 29--------The general public perhaps doesn't realize that the first step for any film to have a chance at a theatrical career is the commitment of the film distributor to take the financial risk to bring the film to a wider public. When the films in question are artistic expressions by some of cinema's most lauded auteurs, that risk is not necessarily any smaller, but the rewards certainly are larger. That about sums up the commitment to excellence that New York-based arthou...

The Forgotten World of America’s Orphanages

user
We have conducted a series of interview with first-time filmmakers showcasing their work at Newport Beach Film Festival: April 15 - 23Gregg Schwenk, the festival director, vowed from the beginning to make the NBFF a filmmaker-friendly affair. "I think a lot of the bigger festivals have forgotten what they originally set out to do," he said. "And that's to assist talented filmmakers in getting their films shown in a theater and exposed not only to audiences but to potential investors." That inclu...
