Bullet Train, Review: Brad luck Pitt

Bullet Train, Review: Brad luck Pitt A Japanese book adapted into an American film, with Brad Pitt in the leading role, set on a high speed train, with armed and dangerous Mafia agents and gangsters on board, seems to be the menu for a high-octane entertainer. And for once, a film delivers most of what it promises. It is a quaint mix of mayhem, mirth and thrills. Bullet Train re-works the gangster genre with a twist that is so obvious that you wonder why did nobody think of it before. And tha...

The Body, Review: No soul

The Body, Review: No soul A murder mystery that moves slickly and logically is a rarity, and The Body initially engages you on both counts. You don’t mind the apparent red herrings that it throws along the way, as you wait with bated breath to see it all unravel. There is a terrible sense of disappointment, though, for the herrings are not herrings, and, moreover, only one of them is red. The film unravels some five of the twenty knots it ties, leaving the remaining fifteen knots not un...

BYUN Sung-Hyun's Bulhandang Keeps Cannes Audience on Toes

Out of Competition Films do not get nearly the same amount of attention as other films in The Festival. Bulhandang (The Merciless) by Byun Sung-Hyun shows that this, perhaps, should not always be the case. Greeted by a thin red carpet turnout, the four main actors were greated with a thunderous applause in the Grand Théâtre Lumière. The audience appeared to be extremely excited about the film as an applause broke out with every production company that appeared on scre...

The 14th Annual San Diego Asian Film Festival (SDAFF)  was held November 7-16, 2013.   SDAFF is one of the largest showcases of Pan-Asian Cinema in North America with over 120 films premiering from over 20 different countries. For more information please visit www.sdaff.org or contact info@sdaff.org

Recently named by USA Today as one of the 10 reasons to visit San Diego, the annual San Diego Asian Film Festival is the flagship event of Pacific Arts Movement (formerly the San Diego Asian Film Foundation), a non-profit media arts organization specializing in Asian and Asian American cinema.

Founded in 2000, the Festival has grown to become the largest exhibition of Asian cinema in the western United States, and has showcased everything from future classics like Bong Joon-ho’s Memories of Murder (US Premiere) to luminary independent work like Patrick Wang’s award-winning In the Family (North American Premiere).

Pacific Arts Movement also presents the SDAFF Spring Showcase, a mini-festival in April, as well as year-round quarterly screenings and community events.

LKFF - THE HOUSEMAID (2010) + Interview with director Im Sang-soo!

#
THE HOUSEMAID is a remake of a very popular 60s Korean thriller. It tells the story of a housemaid hired by a very rich family; her main task is taking care of their young daughter, Nami, as her mother is heavily pregnant with twins. Her father is a high power executive, whose sex life with his wife is not going too good, so he becomes involved with the new housemaid. As I have never seen the original, I can't compare. The film's main character, the housemaid Eun-Yi, is easy to empathise with fro...

LKFF - BLADES OF BLOOD (2010) dir Lee Joon-ik

#
I am not really sure what BLADES OF BLOOD is about specifically; it tells of an illegitimate son, the blind swordsman who teaches him to sword fight and a guy who killed the father and is trying to protect Korea from the Japanese occupation, whom both the son and blind swordsman want to kill. Long story short, I fell asleep. Literally. Action films are really not my thing, I find them mind-numbing. This does not mean I am adverse to a bit of onscreen violence, it's just that it was predictable....

LKFF - Interview with Kim Jee-woon (I SAW THE DEVIL)

#
Tania: I would like to ask you about your background, you were a theatre director and then you went into film. How did that work? Kim Jee-woon: I did theatre in school and I learnt acting then, but people around me told me not to, so I stopped. It was in my early 20's that I learnt that there is someone behind the actors of the stage and that a production needs an overall leader behind everything and that's when I learnt the role of a director. Tania: So how did tha...

LKFF Preview of I SAW THE DEVIL + Q&A with director Kim Jee-woon

#
I SAW THE DEVIL is the last delivery from cult Korean director, Kim Jee-woon exploring the theme of vengeance; young secret agent goes on a hunt and torture rampage of the killer of his fiancée.  I SAW THE DEVIL does not shy away from vicious violence, both displayed by the killer and the agent, with some graphic scenes that resulted in the film being panned by critics in Korean and also banned. Twice. The government being fearful for the mental health of Korean citizens. However, when th...

Contemplations of a Culture-Shocked Movie-Goer

user
By Moze Halpernin Those of you who live in Paris have likely noticed the frightening abundance of misery-stricken, wet, baffled, crushed, torn, tempest-tossed Korean widows plastering the Paris metro stations.  Lurking behind every endearingly Parisian puff of urine with that worn mien, waiting to shatter commuters’ iPoded complacency, silently bemoaning the woes, the burdens, the weight of motherhood.  Actually, said Korean widows are just one Korean widow, played by Hye-Ja Kim, sta...
