(It Must Be Heaven Premiere, Elia Suleiman, © Lindsay Bellinger 2019)  By LINDSAY R. BELLINGER   I was lucky to watch the premiere of Elia Suleiman's glorious film with the director, cast and crew in the main theater. There was plenty of applause to go around, which was no shock to me. It Must Be Heaven world premiered in the Grand Theatre Lumiere was an entertaining spectacle that was sparse on dialogue but those familiar with Elia Suleiman's filmwork shoul...

P.S. Jerusalem, Danae Elon, USA, 2015

In this compelling documentary Danae Elon provides an insightful view of her family’s three-year experience living in Jerusalem to which she returned in 2010 after an absence of 20 years. She prefaced her film with a statement from her father, the renowned liberal Israeli intellectual Amos Elon who left that country in 2005, “We have seen that what men thought was true was often more important than the truth itself”, an observation fitting perfectly her frank portrait of life...

"The Green Prince": A Conversation with Former Operative Mosab Hassan Yousef and Director Nadav Schirman

There are spies who come in from the cold and others who swap one kind of heat for another. One such fevered soul is Mosab Hassan Yousef, the son of Hamas honcho Sheikh Hassan Yousef who spied for Israel’s Shin Bet for more than a decade. Yousef's unlikely tale supplied the grist for his bestselling memoir Son of Hamas, and now it has inspired the documentary thriller The Green Prince. Directed by Nadav Schirman (The Champagne Spy, In the Darkroom), this stranger-than-fiction ac...

One Day After Peace

user
Director: Erez Laufer & Miri Laufer.
Can the means used to resolve the conflict in South Africa be applied to the Palestinian-Israeli conflict? As someone who experienced both conflicts firsthand, Robi Damelin wonders about this. Born in South Africa during the apartheid era, she later lost her son, who was serving with the Israeli Army reserve in the Occupied Territories. At first she attempted to initiate a dialogue with the Palestinian who killed her child. When her overtures were rejected, she embarked on a journey back to South Africa to learn more about the country’s Truth and Reconciliation Committee in overcoming years of enmity. Robi’s thought-provoking journey leads from a place of deep personal pain to a belief that a better future is possible.

From Palestine to Africa

user
Day 4 and it had two distinct themes - the Palestinian/Israeli issue and Africa in all its glory. Things sometime happen to me that seem too coincidental. I was traveling by Peoplemover to see two films about Palestine and then suddenly noticed the Durban Holocaust Centre. I've been trying to find it for years and then it just pops up. Maybe it was a sign... 5 Broken Cameras is an intensely personal documentary made by a resident of Bil'in called Emad Burnat , who started filming his life, t...
