More Than a Festival

Jocasta

Director: Elise Kermani.
In Sophocles' play "Oedipus Rex" Jocasta hangs herself shortly after finding out that Oedipus is both her husband and son. In Euripides' play "The Phoenician Women", Jocasta stays alive a little bit longer to try and reconcile her sons but stabs herself shortly after they kill each other during the war at Thebes. But in Kermani's film "Jocasta", Jocasta stays alive after her sons' mutual murders to perform a sacrifice to save Thebes, and to satiate Ares' ancient fury of Kadmos' slaying of the dragon. Jocasta chooses the creative act of writing over suicide. Her ritual act remembers that Body is Presence (Plato's 'ousia' and Heidegger's 'Ereignis') and Jocasta reminds us that she (also known as Iocasta) is related to Io, the Great Cow goddess of Egypt. The origins of writing are sacred manifestations of ousia/hestia...esti/Being. She reverses the taboo of incest, and reestablishes the symbollic image of mother and son. Jocasta's sacrifice was inspired by an ancient Persian ritual of ingesting the Word to cure illness. www.elisekermani.com/jocasta.html www.elisekermani.com/thejocastaproject.html

Him Himself

Director: Pierre Dawalibi.
A conflict as old as Adam; it is the cause of every war, every greed and every agony; it is the dualism between you and your own self, between your desires and your fears, what you want and what you must. This movie is a reflection for every spectator to identify with, to observe what he/she is really doing to him/herself.

Swedenborg Short Film Festival 2011

Deadline for Submissions: 30th September 2011
Festival Screenings: 18th November 2011

The Swedenborg Short Film Festival 2011 is now open for entries and will place in the Swedenborg Society’s grade II listed neo-classical Hall. Following the success of last year, we hope the festival will continue to establish itself as an annual landmark event on the UK film calendar.

Featuring films of 30 mins or less, the heart of the Festival is to showcase the latest new and established talent. Films should respond to themes encountered in the work of scientist, philosopher, radical theologian and mystic Emanuel Swedenborg (1688 - 1772). Submissions are invited on a variety of themes and genres. Selected submissions will be screened to a public audience at Swedenborg Hall in central London; at the closing of the festival an award will be given for Best Film.

  • All film submissions must be sent in DVD format by post, with a completed application form (available to download here).
  • An administration fee of £5 is placed on all submissions.

Four Days of Therapy for the Population

Montreal's Concordia University is filled with creative, ambitious and radical young artists and academics. The Students of Philosophy Association, SoPhiA, is reaching out to this rich and varied community with their first Film Festival. Over the course of four days, the festival organizers aim to screen at least twelve outstanding films from around the world:

"We are looking for short films of all kinds (shorts, fiction, documentary, and everything in between) to be shown at the festival, titled "Four Days of Therapy for the Population". It is a festival which should be the basis for questioning the human condition. We want to create a place where questions are posed, and discussion blooms. The major themes are centered around relational human experience: in relation to oneself, (identity), to others, and finally in relation to the objective world."

Any and all submissions will be considered (French or English)

Audience votes for their favourite of the fest!

Princess of Nothing

Director: Karsten Pruehl.
In a modern metropolis, a young woman is living a safe life, fulfilled with entertainment and music. But when she starts to feel a threat of her pride, she is beginning to notice an alienation in this engineered world. Thus, she is searching for leadership and indeed: she finds integrety in a new kind of church. A new spirit drives her. Her world-view seams to become slightly more fulfilled, her relationships change for the better. But the man who impersonates the new belief, emerges as a coviting hypocrite. Finally she falls back into her technophilia and experiences relief in devotion to reproduced electric music.
