Welcome to Tokyo CINEMASTERS International Film Festival.
We are hosting our 1st Annual Festival in OCT 1st 2020 at Tokyo Cine Center.
Through discovering films and directing talent from across the globe, our film festival was founded with the mission of developing the next generation of cinema.
Japan loves all cinema, regardless of country, language, or race.
The culture of watching films with subtitles is well established here, with releases from a multitude of nations each year.
However, the majority of those releases are limited to commercial movies. The reality is that there are a wealth of fantastic overseas directors and films lying dormant that we’re never exposed to. The lack of “international” film festivals in Japan has also been an issue.
Based in Tokyo, a place where new and diverse booms are born, this festival brings together films and people active on a global stage.
A festival where you can see cinematic work that cross boundaries of race and language.

When “Shorts by the Sea” closed its film run at the Santa Monica Laemmle last week, indie film supporters paid $14 to see the slate of little screen gems, including AND THE BRAVE SHALL RISE, a 19-minute documentary. This short was the closer, the last film to be shown each day from 9/13 to 9/19. You didn’t expect it to raise the hair on your neck, but it is in Awards contention (qualifying theatrical run) this year for a reason.

I had the honor this week to connect with the incredibly talented, Short Film Grand Jury Prize Winner, Soudade Kaadan. Her story may be one of the most important in the whole festival. As a Syrian filmmaker, she has experienced more hardships than any American filmmaker can imagine. She does not have nearly the same resources as many of her competitors yet she still manages to make high caliber film that is enjoyable even without its profound political context.

I had the pleasure of speaking with Kamasi Washington before the premiere screening of his short film entry, As Told to G/D Thyself. The film is essentially a narrative music video hybrid that takes place over select songs from his newest album Heaven and Earth. If you aren't already familiar with Kamasi Washington's catalog, you should start to learn today. He is one of the premier musicians of this generation, an absolute master of the Jazz form, and highly regarded amongst the best ...
Director: Dmitri Frolov.
Two completely traditional couples of lovers on a warm summer night make a kind of coming-out in front of each other, telling about their hidden impulses from a previous life.
The impetus to making the film was the book of the same name by the Russian religious philosopher Vasily Rozanov, who died 100 years ago. His treatise was devoted to the study of sexuality and its denial in Christianity.
The film was made in the style of experimental films of the 1920s with a non-linear narrative full of strange surrealistic images. He is black and white and devoid of dialogue. The image is based on the music of Alexander Scriabin "The Poem of Ecstasy", composed and performed also at the beginning of the 20th century.
We are so excited to announce that one of the short films featured in our 2018 festival, "Marguerite" directed by Marianne Farley, has been short-listed for an Academy Award!
Congrats to the filmmakers! We are honored to have featured your film in our festival!
