Another big step towards expanding the Festival's international image
WORLD PREMIERES WIN FANTASPORTO 2025
DOLLHOUSE IS THE GRAND PRIZE
This year, the four juries of the 45th edition of the OPORTO INTERNATIONAL FILM FESTIVAL- FANTASPORTO have given us a truly astonishing list of winners, which only goes to show the quality of the event's program, with the awards distributed among a wide variety of films. Asian and North American cinema were clear winners of the festival.
Japan, with the film DOLLHOUSE won Best Fantasy Film. It was produced by the renowned TOHO production company which brought to Fantasporto several journalists and a major TV station, again choosing Porto to launch worldwide its production DOLLHOUSE, soon to be premiered throughout Asia. The beautiful CIELO was highlighted by the International Jury, which awarded it the Special Jury Prize. CIELO also won the Audience Award, ex-aequo with MR.K, one of the great surprises to come out of European cinema.
Moving on to the Directors' Week section, the Best Film went to the American film ZERO and the Special Jury Prize to the Japanese WELCOME TO THE VILLAGE by Hideo Jôjô, one of the directors traditionally selected films for Festivals such as Cannes or Venice. The jury of the Orient Express section awarded the Best Film Award to the Japanese film RIVER RETURNS and the Special Prize to SANA: LET ME HEAR by the multiple Fantasporto winner director Takashi Shimizu. The Portuguese Film Award went to O CRIADOR DE ÍDOLOS by Luis Diogo and the Critics' Award went to Steven Sonderberg's US production COLD WALLET.
Other award-winning directors in the main sections were Chinese director Sam QUAH for his work on A PLACE CALLED SILENCE and Japanese director Junichi Ishikawa for HONEKO AKABANE'S BODYGUARDS, a good cinematic interpretation of the popular manga. The acting awards were varied, In the Fantasy Film section, the Asian star, Judy Ann Santos won for her performance in SCARECROW and American Brendan Bradley for SUCCUBUS. In the Directors' Week, the decisions primed Japanese actress Yuri Nakamura in SAMURAI DETECTIVE ONIHEI: BLOOD FOR BLOOD and actor Tomoki Kimura in RANSHIMA BOUND. The short fantasy film chosen by the International Jury from among 27 films in the competition, was the Hungarian HAPPY PEOPLE The Fantasy Jury also gave a special mention to the Portuguese film GOSTO DE TE VER DORMIR by Hugo Pinto.
