Berlinale Opening Gala to be Broadcast Live in 5 Cinemas across Germany

Everyone coming to the Berlin International Film Festival has every reason to be as happy as a “bear”. Even Berlinale fans who are unable to make it to the capital now have cause to rejoice: the 54th Berlin International Film Festival opening ceremony on February 5 will be broadcast live for the first time in the history of the Berlinale in selected cinemas in Munich, Nuremberg, Cologne, Dettelbach and Hamburg.

Thanks to the support of Media&Broadcast from T-Systems and FTT (Film Ton Technik Hannsdieter Rüttgers GmbH from Düsseldorf) the entire opening ceremony will be broadcast live in selected cinemas. Thanks to Buena Vista who have made 35 mm prints available for the occasion, the opening film – Cold Mountain by Anthony Minghella starring Nicole Kidman, Renée Zellweger and Jude Law – will also be screened.

The evening will be hosted by Anke Engelke and Festival Director Dieter Kosslick in cooperation with Sat.1. The Berlin International Film Festival will be opened by Minister of State for Culture Christina Weiss and the Governing Mayor of Berlin Klaus Wowereit. Following the introduction of the International Jury, Minghella’s Civil War epic Cold Mountain will be screened – simultaneously with the Berlinale Palast screening of the film in the presence of its leading actors – in 5 German cities.


Movie-goers across Germany will thus be able to experience the entire event “at close range” on February 5 at 6:30 p.m.
