This years Bucharest Film Festival (June 28 to July 6) opens with the latest production from Bosnian director Srđan Vuletić. His film IT’S HARD TO BE NICE tells the story of Fudo, a forty year-old taxi driver who wants to lead a good life. Fudo just happens to be in the wrong place at the wrong time: Sarajevo today. In the criminal circles of the city, he is known for giving good “tips” to thieves – in return he gets a share of their profits. But one day he decides to turn a new page.
The films made by Srđan Vuletić can be found in the Yugoslav tradition of realism and political features. In IT’S HARD TO BE NICE large shots present the best of Sarajevo and give the Bosnian capital the importance of a real character. In this society the burden of transition claims bigger efforts for a decent life and the laws of wild capitalism became the new reality of Bosnians.
Srđan Vuletić studied at the Academy of Performing Arts Sarajevo. In 1992, he joined a hospital crew as a medical technician, an experience that was later to inspire the acclaimed documentary I BURNT LEGS (1993, winner of a Felix, the highest European film award, in 1994). His first feature film, SUMMER IN THE GOLDEN VALLEY, made its world premiere at the Toronto Film Festival, and won numerous honors including the VPRO Tiger Award at Rotterdam Film Festival. He is currently a faculty member of the film directing program at the Academy of Performing Arts Sarajevo.
