Conference on dubbing and translating regional issues

On the 17th and 18th of September, the Paroniana Library, Rieti will host the International Conference Translating Voices, Translating Regions. The conference will deal with two themes: Translating Regionalised Literature: theory, practice, case-studies and Dubbing: Meta-language of European Cinema and Audiovisuals, within the perspective of a development in support of the circulation of European cinema and audiovisuals.

Directed and organised by Federico Federici of the French Department, University of Leeds (UK) with the collaboration of the Department of English at the University “La Sapienza”, Rome and AIDAC, the Italian Association of Adaptors for Cinema and television. Financed by Rieti Council and SIAE, with the patronage of the Italian Ministry of Arts and Culture, the event offers a programme of papers that for the first time connects the perspectives of theorists and professionals of translation. Case-studies, theoretical expositions, and proposals for political developments will be tackled by the many delegates.

The guest speakers will be Riccardo Duranti, Edwin Gentzler, Jeremy Munday, Christopher Taylor, Anita Weston and Colin Williams; also Mario Paolinelli and Filippo Ottoni from AIDAC, Lucia Bistoncini from SIAE and Jean-Louis Sarthou of the Syndicat National des Auteurs et des Compositeurs (SNAC) will discuss political and professional perspectives on the current state of dubbing in Italy and France. Among the expected guests on the 18th of September are the Italian Minister of Culture Rocco Buttiglione, who has demonstrated a strong interest in dubbing as an instrument for renewed promotion of Italian cinema in the international market, the chairman of Cinecittà Holding, Carlo Fuscagni, Giacomo Mazzone of Eurovisioni and many representatives from production and distribution industries for cinema and television.
