Grace Productions Documentary Workshop
Friday 7th November 11:00 – 12:30, Education Room, National Maritime Museum (NMM)

Interactive workshop hosted by Ray Tostevin, Creative Director of Grace Productions

Award winning producer Ray Tostevin goes behind the scenes of his latest project, Charlotte: A Royal at War, which will be screened at the Festival on Saturday 8th November. During the workshop, you will have an opportunity to discuss with Ray, the writer and director, about the process of making a feature length history documentary combining dramatic reconstruction with colour archive footage.

Writing for Television
Friday 7th November, 14:00 – 15:30, Education Room, NMM

Interactive workshop presented by Chloe Moss (Big Talk’s development producer) and Jack Thorne (writer)

This session is intended for writers interested in learning how to break into television writing, and focuses on how to retain your voice when writing episodic television. Chloe Moss was part of the team that developed the hit E4 show Skins, and Jack Thorne went from theatre to write for Skins and Shameless.

Coming Up, Coming Down, Treatment Writing Workshop
Saturday 8th November, 14:15 – 15:45, Education Room, NMM

Robert Wulff-Cochrane, Channel 4 Drama’s head of development, will talk about the scriptwriter’s most powerful tool, the treatment. In this workshop Robert will give essential tips on how to write a good treatment, as well as giving inside tips on the kinds of ideas Channel 4 Drama is looking for in its new talent initiative, Coming Up. Also present will be Jack Thorne, whose 2007 Coming Up drama ‘The Spastic King’ will be screened at the workshop. Jack has written for Skins and Shameless, and his first feature has just gone into production with Film 4.

Animate to Fascinate

Andy Wyatt has been working in the animation industry for over 20 years on projects such as Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles and for Aardman Animation. He is currently course leader in Digital Animation at University Cornwall Falmouth (UCF).

This introductory workshop explores the diverse range of animation techniques available, packed with lots of tricks of the trade. Andy will explain how the process of animation works from idea to completion, and how it can be produced, whatever your budget.

How to get High Production Values on a Low Budget

Presented by three Cornish based professionals, Brett Harvey, Morgan Lowndes and John Crooks.

Brett, Morgan and John will be screening their work, and answering your questions on any aspect of film production. Perfect for beginners and students, this informal workshop is your chance to learn the tricks and techniques for shooting your low budget masterpieces and making them look like high budget productions.

Essential advice from industry experts on how to get any track or image cleared for your film, how to get licenses for screenings and negotiation skills. Followed by an open surgery session for those with one-to-one enquiries.

This lecture will change the way you budget forever, introducing ways to elevate your script into a visual form, practical methods for designing for film and demonstrating ‘what the art dept can do for your script’.

John Yorke, BBC Controller for Drama Production and New Talent, will talk about the art of true story telling, giving essential writing tips on character, structure and story arcs that will ensure the magic of the original story is never lost.

Producing Films, Past, Present and Future

Presented by guest speakers Simon Channing-Williams, Dominic Channing-Williams and Daniel Channing-Williams

Simon Channing-Williams has been producing films for over 25 years, with a string of critically acclaimed movies including Vera Drake, Secrets and Lies, Jack and Sarah and The Constant Gardener, to his name.

His sons have just entered the industry and together they will talk about the world Simon entered, and his journey through the industry, comparing it to the challenges that face his sons today. Simon will screen his short film A Sense of History written by Jim Broadbent and directed by Mike Leigh. Come and find out more about the fascinating role of a film producer.

Film to Stage

Presented by Emma Rice, the Artistic Director of Kneehigh Theatre, this lecture will discuss the challenges and processes involved in adapting original stage plays which have become iconic films; most notably her highly acclaimed theatre production Brief Encounter.

Master class hosted by Luke Alkin, Executive Producer, Big Talk Productions

Luke has worked as Development Executive at BBC Films and for six months as acting Head of Drama at Channel 4. He will give essential advice on approaching commissioning editors to pitch your projects.
