HONOLULU – The 2006 Louis Vuitton Hawaii International Film Festival Awards Ceremony honored films, filmmakers and sponsors from across the globe at the Royal Hawaiian Hotel last night, Thursday, October 26, 2006. Comedian Andy Bumentai and Elizabeth Lindsey hosted the evening for a packed house of directors, stars and film fans.
Indonesian director Nia Dinata and actress Jajen C. Noer were present to accept the Halekulani Golden Orchid for Best Feature Film for LOVE FOR SHARE. The film TIME AND TIDE (directors Julie Bayer and Josh Salzman) was honored with the Golden Orchid for Best Documentary, and Rob Stewart's documentary SHARKWATER received a Special Jury Prize.
The television show LOST received the 2006 FILM IN HAWAI'I AWARD. Executive Producer and director Jack Bender accepted the award, which took the form of a koa wood paddle, on behalf of the production. The Film in Hawai'i Award is presented by the State of Hawai'i to the film or television entity that has contributed significantly to promoting the local film industry. The recipient may be a filmmaker, actor or a production company that has helped develop the reputation of Hawai'i as the world’s premiere tropical film location.
The Network for the Promotion of Asian Cinema (NETPAC) Award was given to director Royston Tan, the enfant terrible of Singaporean cinema, for his sophomore effort 4:30. Founded in 1990 by Cinemaya (Asia's finest journal of cinema) and UNESCO, the Network for the Promotion of Asian Cinema is an international not-for-profit organization dedicated to promoting Asian film throughout the world. The prestigious NETPAC Award, presented annually at international film festivals in Berlin, Cannes, Venice, Rotterdam, Pusan, Singapore, Taiwan, Yamagata, Amiens and Hawaii, promotes Asian cinema by spotlighting exceptional works and discovering new talent.
Matthew Libatique was awarded the Eastmann Kodak Award for Excellence in Cinematography. Noted for his collaboration with the great directors Spike Lee (INSIDE MAN) and Darren Aronofsky (THE FOUNTAIN, REQUIEM FOR A DREAM), Libatique is the first Filipino-American cinematographer to receive the award. Past recipients include Russell Boyd, Allen Daviau, Peter Pau, Zhang Yimou and Christopher Doyle.
Filmmaker KEVIN SMITH, the guru of independent film, was honored with the MAVERICK Award. Smith’s work in such classics as CLERKS and CHASING AMY has made him one of the most revered filmmakers of Gen X and Y. "I am only a filmmaker," said Smith. "This means the world to me."
Ken Watanabe received the Festival's ACHIEVEMENT IN ACTING Award from his former acting instructor, Dr. Terrence Knapp. From his rich work in Japanese film and TV (TANPOPO, YEAR ONE IN THE NORTH) to his breakout roles in the West (LAST SAMURAI, MEMOIRS OF A GEISHA), Watanabe carries gravitas that is universal in all cultures.
The Hollywood Foreign Press Association was honored with the VISION IN FILM Award. The HFPA's annual Golden Globe awards have enabled the non-profit organization to donate more than $5.5 million in the past 11 years to charities, scholarships and education. Since its inception, the Vision in Film Award has been given three times - to the HFPA (2006), Ang Lee (1997) and Zhang Yimou (1994).
The Hawaii Film & Videomaker Award was given to Lisette Marie Flanary for her documentary on Robert Cazimero's all male hula troup, NA KAMALEI: MEN OF HULA. The Hawaii Jury bestowed a Special Jury Award to Jay Hubert, for his short film DAO. This is the first time that a student of the newly established Academy for Creative Media at the University of Hawaii has been so honored.
The Honolulu Magazine Award for Best Short Film was given to the Malaysian film MAJIDEE, by director Azhar Rudin. MAJIDEE is a one-take marvel that follows two men engaged in a seemingly innocent conversation in Kuala Lumpur.
The cause & f(x) DREAM DIGITAL Award was given to SUNDAY WIND, by Hawaiian director Michael Wurth. The DREAM DIGITAL Award offers $10,000 of pre- and post-production services from cause & f(x) pictures, LLC, an accredited digital effects boutique based in Honolulu. It includes access to animation suites with accredited digital effects artists, feature filmmakers, 3D animators and more.
The DHL Audience Choice Awards represent the most popular feature film, short film and documentary playing at the 2006 Louis Vuitton Hawaii International Film Festival. The accolades went to THE HOST (Bong Joon-ho, Korea) for feature, NA KAMALEI: MEN OF HULA (Lisette Marie Flanary, USA) for documentary and to RUCKUS! (Dean Ishida, USA) for short.
