Non-professional actors add a sense of authenticity to a story by being present and natural in their roles: The whole cast of Alcarràs, from 8 to 80, is phenomenal; The boys and girls of The Worst Ones break your heart; Adam Bessa of Harka was a fisherman; Simon Wisler of A Piece of Sky is a mountain farmer. Glory Kevin of Princess was a real victim of the sex trade.

What happens when Oliver Hermanus teams up with Nobel prize-winning author Kazuo Ishiguro and actor Bill Nighy to reimagine Akira Kurosawa's masterpiece Ikiru (itself based on Tolstoy’s The Death of Ivan Ilyich) for a new generation? What happens is a gem of a film called Living, a period drama now set in 1950s London, with all the life-affirming compassion of the original. You can watch both films in our program.

One of the hottest genres in filmed entertainment right now – fiction or nonfiction – are swindler stories. If you're in the market for movies about people who present a false front while committing nefarious deeds, we've got two to offer:
Axiom by Jöns Jönsson, the teasingly clever story of Julius the museum keeper, and The Thief Collector by Allison Otto, a light-hearted documentary that takes a deep look at one of the art world's most bizarre and sur...
Just because you’re paranoid doesn’t mean they aren’t after you.
Alex van Warmerdam's tenth film, NO. 10, is complex, funny and shocking, continually wrong-footing us with a series of increasingly audacious and mind-boggling U-turns before a climax that is out of this world.
Here’s a tip: If you accidentally run into a strange man behaving strangely on a bridge, something is up.

For the deliciously creepy look no further than our Haifa’s Wild Nights section. We’ve got movies full of dark and twisty tales (Speak No Evil - Christian Tafdrup), we’ve got spooky destinations (No. 10 - Alex van Warmerdam), interesting people (Brian and Charles - Jim Archer), serial killer horror (Dark Glasses - Dario Argento) and tales (tails?) of the bizarre (Piaffe - Ann Oren). All that is needed to round up the party is a bunch of rather vicious teddy bears (Unicorn Wars ...
