OSCAR WINNER SIR KEN ADAM: ISCHIA FILM FESTIVAL 2009’S CHAIRMAN

The production designer Sir Ken Adam (Oscar awarded for “Barry Lyndon” and “The Madness of King George”) will be the organization Committee’s chairman of the Ischia Film Festival seventh edition, the only international competition dedicated to the filming locations, which will take place in theisland of Ischia from July 5th to 11th. Sir Ken Adam, who was declared an Honorary citizen of Ischia, became a production design master internationally renowned thanks to his visionary settings and theoverwhelming architectural creations that made the James Bond’s set designs unforgettable between the Sixties and the Seventies, or, even more precious, a worldwide cinema masterpiece like “Dr. Strangelove”, by the genius Stanley Kubrick who was a once collaborator and friend of his. This is an amazing job, where the talent is not sufficient and it takes also a good dose of courage” affirmed the well-known set designer, “because you have to handle people endowed with big egos and with whom you have to be very diplomatic. Since the beginning I’ve always tryed to ‘invent’ the set design, Ihad to build a reality that didn’t exist and that the audience accepted right away. Through my work I wanted to let the viewer find an escape from the real world, which is the cinema’s very essence to me”. Always there as an unfailing protagonist since the Ischia Film Festival’s first edition, Sir Ken Adam reaffirmed the importance of the event founded and directed by Michelangelo Messina: “It’s important to have a film festival like the Ischia one, which is dedicated to the filming locations and gives the right visibility to the places”. Before shooting here “The CrimsonPirate”, in 1951,” Adam added, “I didn’t know Ischia. At that time it was very savage, and I instantly fell in love with it. I’ve lived here for five or six months with the technicians and the director, to turn this film, which had Burt Lancaster starring in the leading role. Then I met Letizia, a beautiful girl from Ischia, a colonel’s daughter, and the next year we married here”. Under the High Patronage of the President of the Italian Republic, the Ischia Film Festival is organized by the Ischia Municipality in collaboration with the Campania Region, as part of one of the six theme paths scheduled in the “Journey in the Creativity”. The complete event plan will be announced to the journalists on June 25th at a press conference at the ANICA building in Rome.
