Martin Scorsese Masterclass in Cannes

Swiss director Lionel Baier's satirical tale

Un autre home” (“Another Man”) is the only Swiss movie made in years I guess, to be showed in any festival program really. Before FEST in Belgrade, the film dragged attention on Lorcano Film Festival, in August last year, when it celebrated its world premiere. At first you think:  it’s a French movie, but if you look twice you might give a second thought.  The rights to the movie are French, but the film is actually Swiss. Another small cinematography.

Another Man” is the story about François, who writes film reviews for a small, weekly newspaper in the remote village Vallée du Joux in western Switzerland. He moved there for his teacher girlfriend and has got the job to write film reviews for films showed in the local cinema. François has no experience as a critic and no special opinions about film, so he copies the reviews from the other papers, Paris-based magazine, “Traveling.” Soon, he starts to travel to a nearby city of Lausanne for press screenings. There, he meets fascinating Rosa, who works as a critic for a large Swiss daily and starts an affair with her.

This black and white, stark, covered with snow story gives the strong impression. But in author’s mind visually, filming totally in black and white emphasizes the contrasts and emotions in the film. The film indeed shows intimate scenes of life with different characters, a separation, an argument, love making between man and woman, which gives the film a little French taste. Lionel shoots physique and close ups – he spends a lot of time in various stages of undressing, foreplay or scenes of smoking. All this in black and white, so the film gets another dimension and it gets to be remembered. It gives a kind of satiric element as well.  Baier says it is "the most personal film I've made" because it develops topics, such as sexuality and mixing up genres. Well it is. The film is sensible and fresh, and it is pretty artistic, and was the best film on Lorcano Film Festival in the competition.
