Zipangu Fest - Tetsuaki Matsue In Conversation

Tetsuaki Matsue is a young Japanese indie filmmaker (of Korean descent, which he explored in his graduation film, Annyong Kimchi) who is currently at the forefront of Japan's indie scene. Having successfully directed a documentary about AV actress Yumika Hayashi, Annyong Yumika (also in the festival), after the discovery of her involvement in a low-budget Korean production. He attended the festival due to his latest film, Live Tape, which took the Japanese festival circuit by surprise due to the simplicity of its' concept - one musician, one camera, one tape, one take. The film has won the 2009 Japanese Eyes Best Picture Award at Tokyo International Film Festival and the Nippon Connection 2010 Digital Award.

Jasper Sharp conducted the Q&A with Julian Ross acting as translator. A few opening questions were asked and then Matsue's short, The Virgin Wildsides Part 1 was screened.

Virgin Wildsides is about the director's lovesick friend is still a virgin at 23. Matsue devises a plan to have him deflowered - with cameras rolling. In turns, funny and informative.
