How to Enter the 48 Film Project Online Shorts Competition

48 Film Project is the ultimate international online short film competition. Make a film between four (4) minutes and seven (7) minutes long, and upload your entry online.

Here’s how it works

Our competition is global and it runs from January 1 to November 15. Compete from anywhere…your bed, your bathtub, the South Pole, the dark side of the moon. We don't care. You can shoot your film from any place you like, at any time you want (within the competition period).

Ours is the only short film contest entirely online. There are no reels, no kick-off dates, and no drop-off points. We've canned them.

How to enter 48 Film Project’s international online short film competition

1 Choose your kit

We accept a digital file from any device, including mobiles, smart phones, iPhone, or iPad. No restrictions. Use as many cameras or devices as you want. As long as they shoot moving pictures, and your entry complies with The Rules, you can use what-ev-ah tech you want.

2 Register on the 48 Film Project site

Register your team
Choose your genre – see the list on the Genres page.

3 Pre-production Work

Here's what you are permitted to do in advance:

Organise your team
Cast your actors
Choose your genre
Procure your equipment
Secure your locations

4 Ready to Roll?

You decide when you are ready to commence your shoot. Get your team lined up with everyone pointing in the same direction. Be sure to read The Rules before you start!

5 Online kick-off

Log in to 48 Film Project site
Go to your profile page
Push the "Competition" button
Get your elements
The countdown has started! You have 48 hours to make your film.

Remember the production/creation of your film includes the following:

Script writing
Directing
Costume design and creation
Props and set design and building
Shooting
Editing
Sound recording
Processing
Production
In other words, EVERYTHING…in 48 hours!

Your Three Elements

Your short film must include the required elements. The 48 Film Project system allocates them randomly. These elements will be displayed on your profile page, immediately after you push the “Competition” button.

Line: must be recited as given with no variation or falsification.
Prop: required for at least one scene.
Character: can be a supporting role, but must be present in the film in at least one scene.

Use your elements in a thought-provoking and interesting way. Every team must use them, but each combination is unique, so make the most of the opportunity to be original.

6 Post-Production and Submission

When you’ve edited and produced your piece, you must add the titles. Before the film begins, the file should have:

5 seconds of black
A title card with: team name, date, city, title, and genre
A title card with: "This film is made for 48FilmProject.com 2014."
2 seconds of black

You can add 60 seconds worth of credits at the end of the film, making a maximum running time of eight (8) minutes, but the credits must not exceed 60 seconds.

Upload your film!

Had fun? Why not do it all again? There are no restrictions on the number of entries. Register your team or join as a member.
