The 28th annual Vancouver International Film Festival concluded its 16-day run today with the closing gala screening the French film QUEEN TO PLAY (Joueuse), directed by Caroline Bottaro, in the Visa Screening Room at the Empire Granville 7 Cinemas. Jimmywork, the controversial first feature from Francophone filmmaker Simon Sauvé, took the CHUM Television Award for Best Canadian First Feature, along with $2,000 cash. A cross between film noir, biopic and cinema vérité, the film follows Sauvé’s neighbour, Jimmy Webster, a gambler, drinker and hopeless schemer with endless ambition, but dishonourable intentions.
