The phrase ‘joined at the hip’ springs to mind immediately when it comes to the argument that winners at the Golden Globes then go on to double up at the Baftas before claiming the hat-trick at the Oscars…suffice to say that only 1 person achieved the hat-trick on a what turned out to be yet another watershed Oscars…
70 years ago, Hattie McDaniel made history by becoming the 1st black actress to win an academy award for her role in ‘Gone With The Wind’ – 70 years on, an...
Yes, we all expected AVATAR and THE HURT LOCKER to have good showings for this morning's Oscar nomination announcements (they are both tied at 9 nominations each) and we were not surprised when the names George Clooney, Jeff Bridges, Sandra Bullock and Meryl Streep were intoned at the 5:30am ceremony in Los Angeles. And yes, even the six nods for PRECIOUS (including well-deserved nominations for Gabourey Sidibe, Mo'Nique, director Lee Daniels and screenwriter Geoffrey Flet...

Sandra Bullock continued her remarkable year where she has dominated the box office and been declared the number one top grossing star in the movies today. Bullock has become a serious best-actress competitor in the past month, with her SAG win, a win last week at the Golden Globes and a tie with Meryl Streep in the Critics Choice Movie Awards. The stars seem to be aligning for this well liked actress who has quietly entertained a...
Well, after watching the Golden Globe Awards ceremonies last evening, I had the distinct feeling: who needs the Oscars? I've already seen the winning films, directors and actors and heard their acceptance speeches. The Oscar ceremony, which is not scheduled until six weeks from now, seems quite besides the point. Except for the fashion ("who are you wearing?" is the question of the moment), I am imagining that last night's Golden Globe winners will be simply re-doing their "best of" acceptance...

I am at the Palm Springs International Film Festival and got to spend opening night interviewing the creative team responsible for this year’s opening night film. I had already seen The Last Station back in November in Los Angeles for the Tribute to Christopher Plummer so this was a wonderful opportunity to meet with these talented people...
In the 81 year history of the Academy Awards, nearly 500 films have been nominated for the Best Picture Oscar. Up until now, not a single film that was directed by a black filmmaker has been included on that list. However, this year, with the critical and popular success of the urban indie drama PRECIOUS, that ignoble record could be history.
PRECIOUS, directed by Lee Daniels, has undergone a fascinating journey to become the "it" film of the indie film season.....a jo...
Jeremy Renner in THE HURT LOCKER
It happens every year.....key performances, outstanding films and worthy indies and international titles that seem primed for awards consideration are inexplicably ignored. This has happened again with the announcement last week of the Golden Globe Award nominations, considered second only to the Oscars.
The Hollywood Foreign Press Association, the group of 80 international film critics and journalists who vote for the prizes, is known f...
Lots of festivals have "international" in their name, but don't really mean it. Not so the Palm Springs International Film Festival, cinema's answer to the UN.
PSIFF assembles the films that have been nominated by their countries of origin as the year's surest shot at winning a Best Foreign Language Oscar. The Festival's 21st session, running January 5-18, 2010, will show more than 200 films from 60 countries. From rogue nations to close allies, much of the global community...

More than 50 Hollywood stars have been set as presenters at "The 66th Annual Golden Globe Awards" which took place Sunday, January 11, 2009 at The Beverly Hilton with a live telecast on NBC. NOTE: The Golden Globes are awarded by the Los Angeles Foreign Press Association, which is composed chiefly of a handful of Hollywood-struck geriatric non-entities less known for their profundity in the assessment of films than for their fear of being caught on the wrong band wagon.
