MAshRome Film FestThe MAshRome Film Fest is created by the MashRome Association to promote and spread the cinematic mash-up as a new “genre”, able to enter the market and compete with other artistic forms of expression at the same level. The festival will take place in the spring of 2012 and it will showcase previews of the best new mash-ups of filmmakers from all over the world. A panel of judges comprising illustrious names in the artistic, cultural and film industry world, will decide the winner of the competition, whose work will be either distributed or receive money as a prize. The Mash Up is a montage of images and sounds that are taken from different sources and then copied, cut, pasted, transformed, remixed and combined in order to create a brand-new piece of art. This genre derives from the collage-film and the found footage technique, which uses extra footage to create a new film. It is also the new language of those who, with the help of new technologies, want to make unconventional products, such as collective works that anyone can modify at any time.
The mash-up films combine existing images taken from multiple sources (television, cinema, music, contemporary art). The result of this contamination is the creation of a completely different work with a new meaning.
The three sections of MAshRome Film Fest focus on the coexistence of tradition and innovation. Experimentation in mash-ups explores the boundaries of genres (creating hybrids), languages (making them ovelap), models (comparing them), lengths (amplifying or reducing them to the minimum). In this middle earth, the ideals and visions of the masters of cinema meet provocative experimentations of young mash-up makers and the most varied forms of contemporary cinema. Here, the different languages of the different genres, inspired by different models, collide to become the motion pictures of the future in the form of mash-ups of different lengths.
Documentary, animation, reports, and quotation coexist in mash-ups, going from the analog past, to the digital present, and the satellite future. The Mash-up is a metaphor of contemporary cinema. Fiction, documentary, news… it is everywhere and we do not even notice. |
