About the Director:

Jon RaymondJon Raymond is an independent filmmaker, writer, and photographer, while holding a day job as a web developer in the Los Angeles financial sector. From 1970 to 1974 he studied photography and film at the Philadelphia College of Art (now known as the University of the Arts).

Jon moved on to join the Air Force during “peacetime” in 1980 out of need for a job in what seemed like a 180-degree turn from his past convictions against the Vietnam War. This was an adventure for him and he enjoyed seeing the world as a flight engineer, until the Gulf War happened. He moved on to graduate school in Communication at the University of Delaware (1991 – 1994). This led him into a 15 year computer-programming career with employment in Los Angeles in 2000. There surrounded by the movie industry he fell in love again with filmmaking. He took on studio extra work and student and short film roles as an actor. He started writing screenplays and then began producing and directing his own short dramatic and documentary films.

With the presidency of George Bush and then the 2008 election between McCain and Obama, Jon became very interested in politics and took on a grass roots blogging stint with the Huffington Post. His involvements lead him to make documentary clips for more blogs and eventually this feature work. This required much less in external resources than dramatic stories with actors, but still a lot of time and labor.

The street protests that began in the summer of 2009 caught Jon's interest, since he noticed they were not covered at all in the news media. He went out and began to film them and post clips on various websites such as Current.com, YouTube (OutInTheStreetFilms), Vimeo, and his own blog. The accumulation of video and the momentum that resulted in sit-in protests and widespread arrests lead him to decide to make this film. He went on to update the film with reaction from the passage of the health care law PPACA as late as 2013.

Film synopsis:

Across America, protesters took to the streets to voice their concern for universal healthcare. Many of them were doctors and nurses, and were organized by groups like PNHP (Physicians for a National Health Care Program), the Mad as Hell Doctors, based in Oregon and California Nurses Association. At issue was legislation to reform national healthcare. Countering the doctors were groups like tea party organizations, including the Pasadena Patriots. Numerous Congressional local town hall meetings were held in addition to rallies and sit-ins. During a week in September 2009 over 100 were arrested and hundreds more backed them at sit-ins at health insurance organizations around the country. These events comprise the locations in this film.

Economic pressures by US corporations continue to threaten universal health care insurance systems in other countries, such as Great Britain where a 2012 corporate takeover of the NHS resulted in a debt run up of £4.1million within six months with patient satisfaction down by 14 points.

The fallacies of the new ACA law (Obamacare - authored by industry insider, Liz Fowler) allow insurance industry control over people's health with unregulated rate raises, making health insurance ultimately out of reach, despite its new availability.

The concern by proponents of national health care was and still is the lack of health care for 48 million Americans, the death of over 48,000 due to lack of care annually, the high 30% overhead of private corporate insurance, the ubiquitous standard of denial of claims by insurance companies, and the fear of health care being motivated by corporate profits and greed. PNHP claims that over 65% of doctors support universal healthcare and that the most acceptable method of doing this is through a single payer system whereby the government provides all people with basic health insurance coverage. This is a standard used by nearly every other developed country in the world.

Those who opposed reform are proponents of the health industry profit model and argue for ways to keep profits high, with little regard for human life, suffering, and exclusion to services. They claim services would be diluted and that those who now receive “the best health care in the world” would have to share resources with everyone else. Their wanton greed and lack of compassion for those who suffer and die for corporate profits is sadistic.

Supporters of universal care cite research that indicates the U.S. ranks 37th in the overall quality of health care services among nations of the world. Though the U.S. does have some of the best resources and technology, it is only available to those who can afford it or who have insurance. It is the delivery aspect of care that gives the U.S. a low ranking.

The passage of he complex ACA reform bill in 2010, of over 2000 pages, written primarily by Liz Fowler (former Wellpoint PR executive), was a victory for the insurance industry in passing laws that mandate all people must carry private health care insurance. Though the bill was initially written to decrease insurance rates, parts of it have been repealed and are under continued revision as rates continue to increase.

This film incorporates interviews with over 65 intelligent and eloquent speaking people at rallies, protests and sit-ins. It uses a unique stream of conversation style, where there is virtually no narration. Instead answers to questions posed to one interviewee are posed to others who then retort. In this way nearly all the issues for and against reform are discussed. The definitions of terms like single payer and public option are discussed and defined clearly by doctors, nurses and the President. White House footage of Obama’s health care reform press conference and other talks are also used to state his position and reactions to it.

Maureen Cruise RN (retired) is used throughout the film, in what could be thought of as a narrator. Although nearly all of her clips are taken from one 28-minute interview at a sit-in where she describes nearly every aspect, argument and concern of the issues. Numerous other doctors add to this with their own descriptions of the issues and statistics that validate their concerns. These include Dr. Susie Baldwin, Dr. Matt Hendrickson, Dr. Jo Olson, Dr. Paul Song, Dr. Paul Hochfield, Dr. Margaret Flowers, Dr. Carol Paris, Dr. Marc Sapir and many others, all with very compelling arguments.

Three other filmmakers provide clips of important scenes, including the arrests of Drs. Flowers and Paris in Washington DC at a Republican retreat, the heart wrenching appeal of handicapped Marianne Hoynes at a New Jersey town hall meeting, and the arrest of Dr. Matt Hendrickson in Glendale CA at a CIGNA sit-in.

Film reviews:

I watched the movie and it's excellent! Especially liked the way you traced the trajectory of Obama's downfall from single-payer preference to the mess that is PPACA. The woman who defined Socialism as a shortage of toilet paper is, alas, a classic.. I've met many like her. The American public has so much to learn..... We're grateful for your efforts, and hope to spread the word far and wide.
- Carol Tvaroh

This film is a highly intelligent presentation; a "coversation" between both proponents and opponents. I doubt if any of you will be able to find a better discussion of the health care issue.
- John Kavanaugh

I am thrilled that many people are making documentary films and disseminating what corporate media has not only ignored but also drowned out with glossy schlock. The questions for me are: Does this interest people? Does it reveal information? Does it strengthen our human bond? Do people like it?
- Maureen Cruise, RN

From All Lights Film Magazine: Got Healthcare? (The question of the century), a 90 minutes documentary film directed by Jon Raymond deliberately makes a debate upon the current healthcare reforms of America.

Got Healthcare? (The question of the century) is a 90 minute documentary film. This stream of conversation documentary is a passionate energetic discussion on the various issues that continue to surround health care reform in America and the world. Doctors, nurses, and activists (both pro and con on reform) seemingly converse in a give and take of ideas compared and contrasted through editing. It was shot beginning in 2009 during the height of street protests, as formation of the current U.S. law was debated. The film contains updated reactions to the new law from as late as 2012. The film focuses on the issue of a single payer (Medicare for all) system, unlike any other health care related films that are currently prominent.

The stream of conversation film style uses interviewees to tell the story and explain concepts instead of the more traditional high profile "name" actor with cute graphics. The film was shot on a very low original production budget of about $3,000 and without a production crew by producer-director-photographer, Jon Raymond. Jon also edited the film. The final effect is an unpolished gritty street reality look, as much out of necessity as by choice. A clear unapologetic view of the US for-profit system and its criminality (45,000 Americans die annually for lack of healthcare according to a Harvard study) should scare the pants off anybody who understands and enjoys healthcare as a human right. It is a shocking situation, and non Americans will be astounded by the facts in this film.

Maureen Cruise is one of the main activists interviewed in the film. Maureen is a member of PNHP (Physicians for a National Health Program) and CNA (California Nurse Association). PNHP, CNA and member doctors and nurses are prominent throughout the film, among the 65 street activists interviewed. Maureen has promoted the film at various activist events where it has been screened and well received.
