CAMBOFEST, Cambodia ~ Call for Entries Continues through November 1st  Cambodia's longest running international movie event! UPDATE: For the 4.0 Edition, CamboFest hosts the long-belated Cambodian premiere of Robert Flaherty's classic documentary, "Nanook of the North" - 88 years after its release -  with the kind permission of Flaherty Seminars. Founded in 2550 (2007), CAMBOFEST: Film and Video Festival of Cambodia is one of the only annual international movie events in Cambodia ...

A Journey Into The Heart of Darkness

user
It is always a leap of faith to go into the heart of darkness, but the rewards can be great. This sentiment comes to mind with the release this Friday of one of the most harrowing and compelling personal documentaries of the year. ENEMIES OF THE PEOPLE exposes for the first time the truth about the Killing Fields and the Khmer Rouge who were behind Cambodia’s brutal genocide of its own population. The film recounts historical facts through the personal ...

The Human Rights Watch organization is an international group with offices in 18 countries publishing well received investigative reports about human rights violations which are taken seriously by policy makers. Human Rights Watch Film Festival Seeks "Accountability and Justice"

user
Last July, the nonprofit group Human Rights Watch put out a hefty report drawn from its prior two decades of watching dogs in some 20 countries. Called Selling Justice Short, the dossier showed why accountability was a good thing for peace and, if nothing else, could help heal victims by acknowledging their anguish. I didn't read it – nor likely did you – but the Human Rights Watch Film Festival supplies some visual Cliff's Notes. This year it gives witness to human rights violations ...

Santa Barbara wrapped with awards to Letters to Father Jakobs

user
The 25th Annual Santa Barbara International Film Festival announced the winners of the 2010 festival competition at a Press Conference and Sunday morning brunch at the famed Fess Parker's Doubletree Resort, hosted by KTYD Radio's Julie Ramos. The festival, which celebrated its Silver Anniversary February 4-14, was a huge success. By the look of the theaters you'd never know the economy was in the fight of its life as audiences packed the theaters for the last 11 days, proving once again how p...

European Docs Shine At Sundance

user
In a somewhat strange convergence, European documentaries were the overall winners in all categories at the Sundance Film Festival, which announced its awards Saturday evening. While this is certainly a boon for European non-fiction makers, the European dramatic films in the World Cinema competition were uniformly snubbed. . However, there was much love for European docs, which is certainly something to celebrate. Winner of the Grand Jury Prize in the World Cinema Documentary section...

CAMBOFEST: Film and Video Festival of Cambodia 4th Edition

CAMBOFEST: Film and Video Festival of Cambodia is the first international, independent movie festival in Cambodia (and currently the only annual international movie event in Cambodia)

Now entering our 4th Edition, CAMBOFEST sets a standard for the region by screening all movies only with the permission of filmmakers/copyright holders. Our aim is to contribute to the return of a viable movie industry in Cambodia by showcasing movies by both international and local Cambodian filmmakers - and in the process, entertaining and 'edutaining' a whole new moviegoing audience.

Our most recent, 3rd edition took place in a vintage pre-Khmer Rouge cinema house which CamboFest staff discovered in Kampot, on Cambodia's South CamboFest brought that movie house, the Royal, back to life especially for the event - and truem pioneering movie magic was experienced by all festgoers and participating filmmakers.

See Stills and Video from our most recent edition at the Royal cinema, here on our Blog at:

A Cast of Characters In Amsterdam

user
While Amsterdam certainly boasts its own unique cast of characters that one can observe on the streets, in the stores and the coffee shops, some of the most intriguing people I met during my stay at IDFA were on the film screen. When you immerse yourself in as many films as I did (an average of four per day), one comes away with a contact high from the encounters with unique individuals with unique stories and circumstances that stay with you (with me, at least). And while I am already...

The Festival's imprimatur is highly regarded and respected in the world of programmers and festival directors, who are here in Amsterdam scouring for the best in non-fiction film. Here is the first part of the films compet...

'CAMBODIA DREAMS' by Stanley Harper

user
‘CAMBODIA DREAMS’,  DIRECTED BY STANLEY HARPER LEKHA J. SHANKAR, Bangkok As the world watches the historic trials of the atrocious Khmer Rouge regime in Cambodia, this is a good time to watch a ‘life-affirming’  film on the country, by a New Zealand director, who spent two decades of his life, to make it. Stanley Harper’s 18-year-old cinematic odyssey ‘Cambodia Dreams’   is an amazing film in more ways than one. Apart from being made against all odds in a political...

A lifelong dream of acclaimed Cambodian film director Rithy Panh, (director of award wining ‘The Khmer Rouge Death Machine’ 2003) president of the Association for the Research, Production and Archiving of Audiovisual documents (ARPAA), the opening of the Bophana archives was, in Mr. Panh’s words, “Symbolic for us – because the Khmer Rouge did not only kill people but they ...
