seeking answers to Japan's new reality
Festival / Tokyo – Japan's largest performing arts event –
is to be held this autumn in Tokyo, overcoming the immense obstacles posed by
the March 11th earthquake and tsunami that devastated the country, and along
with its subsequent nuclear crisis have shaken the nation's very social
fabric.

For most of the planet, the official end of summer does not come until the autumn equinox on September 21. However, for people in the film industry, the Fall season begins in only a few weeks, with the beginning of the autumn film festival cycle. Kicking off (startingly early this year) in Montreal on August 18 with the Montreal World Film Festival and then dashing across the pond to the Venice Film Festival, which begins on August 28, and then back across to the Toronto Film Festival, ...
For 37-year-old performance artist, writer and filmmaker Miranda July, life is a series of lessons about loss, mortality and the inescapable feeling that time is slipping away. And yet, despite these heavy themes, her depiction of a kind of blank and ironic human comedy has been the hallmark of her style. This maddeningly passivity has clearly connected with some and infuriates others. Well, both these camps will have much to react to as July’s sophomore film effort THE FUTURE starts it...
Any event that can bring together such high power heavyweights as Steven Spielberg, Peter Jackson and a host of stellar movie stars is the definition of clout. So, let’s be clear…..Comic-Con, the sprawling exhibition and promotion extravaganza that just wrapped in San Diego, has major clout. The confab, originally a geeky celebration of comic book culture, has become the go-to place for film and television series with comic book origins and fantasy/supernatural/phantasmagoric films in ge...

Scud Interview (Love Actually… Sucks!)
Posted on June 25, 2011 by Le Anne Lindsay
Q: When it comes to love, sex and relationships, What do you hope our QFest audience will take away from this film (Love Actually… Sucks!) ?
Scud: I reckon many audiences may find sympathetic
experience from their own love. To me the film is a vibration, a sign,
an exclamation to what love is and means to our life, and the fact that
passion is often very fateful, as the shopkeeper...

Sadistic piano teachers, lovesick young hairdressers, frosty chocolate-factory directors, dark ladies crushed in the French provinces, stuttering factory workers, honest magistrates or evil mothers who can slice the screen to shreds with a single glance.
There are truly few actresses on the international scene who, like Isabelle Huppert, have that ability to give shape, in the versatility of the her many roles, to that disturbing femininity that is a narrative all on its own and all o...

A hundred years after the climbing and scientific expedition of Duke of the Abruzzi to the Baltoro glacier in Karakorum, a team of scientists and photographers, lead by photographer and alpinist Fabiano Ventura, is following in his footsteps with the aim of carrying out an accurate analysis of the climate change effects and to compile for the first time a visual record of the transformations that have taken place in the Baltoro glacier during the last century.
By comparing Vittorio Sella’s and Massimo Terzano’s photographs with those of Fabiano Ventura , as well as through data collection on field and laboratory analysis, the purpose of the mission is to highlight the environmental and glacier changes that have taken place over the last century in the most sensitive and relevant system, that is cryosphere.
At present, it is widely recognized at scientific as well as at public level that glaciers represent a reliable indicator of the global climate and environmental changes that our planet is experiencing.

Last night, “The Social Network” came away from the 12th Annual Golden Trailer Awards with three wins in major categories and the coveted top honor, Best in Show. After carrying away the trophies for “Best Drama,” “Best Music” (which gauges the creative use of music in a promo reel) and “Most Original”—Sony Pictures’ “The Social Network” trailer na...
