In September 2005 I first met Jesse when he was co-starring in a production of Orphans written by Lyle Kessler and directed by Ulu Grosbard with Al Pacino in the lead. It wasn’t a well publicized event which was under the auspices of the Actors Studio. As an Actors Studio member I was privileged to see Jesse in the role of the younger of 2 brothers. He had this unique presence as the introverted acrophobic brother and he definitely made an impression on me. The play was...

I finally had the privilege of watching “Wilde Salome,” the film version of “Salome” aka “Salome Maybe?”, directed by Al.. In a similar fashion which he explored in “Looking for Richard”, Al digs into the depths of an Actors Studio member to give audiences the internal life of how he works. Scraping the surface and peeling the layers which make him the actor he is today. Always working from the inside to reveal the inner workings of the play and how to share thi...

Visiting 72nd Street and Broadway today, one finds the confluence of Sherman Square and Verdi Park. It's a nice little area, complete with statues, tasteful landscaping, and the occasional homeless person scattered among the yuppies and other usual upscale riffraff that haunt the UWS. There's a Gray's Papaya, a Burritoville, a few chain stores and a lot of nice buildings. Physically, it's not far from the area where they filmed exteriors on Music and Lyrics; architecturally, it is ...

The summer of 1999 carried a lot of firsts for me.It was the first time I was able to perform one of my dream plays on the stage -- as Tom in "The Glass Menagerie".It was the first time I had ever quit a job -- a job I had held for eight years -- because I was told I couldn't take a much deserved vacation to L.A.And speaking of L.A., it was my first time on a plane...the first time I had ever taken a personal vacation......and the first (ok, and only) time I met Al Pacino. You have ...

FIRST IMPRESSIONS
The titles quickly fade up and extinguish, burning away like the tissued wrapping of a cigarette. The first image smashes like a thunderbolt upon the screen, a point of view shot from behind a cloth hood. We hear the slightest whispers of strained breaths as tribal drums pound furiously on the soundtrack.
Not even thirty seconds into Michael Mann's 1999 film "The Insider" and we're already suffocating.
The man behind the mask is Lowell Bergman, the venerable producer of "60...
Why are Pacino's contributions more impressive than De Niro's?
1. THE STAGE
Pacino, even to this day, eats, sleeps and breathes acting. It's all that he knows. He began in the theatre and still goes back and performs for scale once or twice a year.
An interesting anecdote that speaks to how extensive theatrical experience aided Pacino from a career standpoint takes place in the late sixties. He was discovered by budding producer Martin Bregman in a New York production of "Does a Tiger We...
THE ELITE:
In a career teeming with brilliant work, these are Al Pacino's greatest films.
The Godfather: This is where the legacy begins, both of the greatest one-two punch in film history and Pacino's stellar career. Pacino first plays the highly moral idealist Michael sheepishly, until he subtly morphs into a cold-blooded gangster right before your eyes. It is the most amazing transformation ever portrayed in the cinema; made all the more powerful because you barely register it happening. A+
