Market Wrap Up For European Cinema

user
With 2009 coming to a close, which represented a challenge to the specialty distribution market in North America (and everywhere else), French cinema was the sole bright light in what has become a shrinking market for European quality film. While there were some celebrated films from Germany (The Baader Meinhof Complex), Spain (Broken Embraces), Italy (Gomorrah) and the UK (Bright Star, Hunger), their overall box office performances were considered very modest. The BBC co-prod...

He has gone on to produce and direct films. He is most known for his auteur discoveries, and he has shared with me, his joy most recently, about spending time at a film festival in Lyon, France, where he has so many fond memories from his youth. by Marla Lewin Francis Ford Coppola at Torino Film Festival photo by Marc Halperin     Another in our series on the Future of Cinema.   We were attending the Torino Film Lab and I had the opportunity to interview Francis Ford Coppola. I mentioned we are working on a series about the Future of Cinema, and Francis said he has his own theory, but it would take some time to explain and would use up all of our time. He doesn’t think ...

The New Home For International Cinema

user
With foreign-language films (with "dreaded" sub-titles) becoming more and more difficult to find theatrical distribution, the action has moved to the home screen for even films that have been major presences on the international film festival circuit. IFC Films, which still does do day-and-date simultaneous openings in theaters and on its on-demand television network, is increasingly showcasing films strictly on its IFC ON DEMAND service, available via cable and satellite tel...

From Rotterdam to Sundance Vancouver International Film Festival

user
A couple of years ago, the Vancouver International Film Festival (October 1 – 16, 2009) used to be one of the best film festivals, not just in North America, but in the world. This is a very strong claim and it is not just the usual rhetoric exaggeration of the film critic. But this is no longer the case. It is still a very good film festival, but, alas, it has lost the bold and unconventional flavour that used to make it absolutely exceptional. The reason why the Vancouver International Film ...

The Anti-Blockbuster: European Films On American Screens

user
by Sandy Mandelberger, Film New York Editor Summer is the traditional time at movie multiplexes for blockbuster films from the Hollywood studios that tend to focus more on explosions and special effects than effective storylines. While there is no denying the box office clout of such films as TRANSFORMERS, TERMINATOR SALVATION and WOLVERINE, there are some less deafening art films that are also being released on American screens. Call it counter-programming, a strategy of offering a breather ...

MoMA Tribute To Strand Releasing

user
by Sandy Mandelberger, Film New York Editor Being an independent distributor of European films in the American market is more a labour of love than it is a ticket to monied success. Among the most hard-working and celebrated of these arthouse distribution companies is Los Angeles-based Strand Releasing, which is receiving a 20th anniversary tribute next week at the prestigious Museum of Modern Art (MoMA) in New York. MoMA is presenting a six-film showcase of recent titles fro...

The Italian Invasion Of New York

user
by Sandy Mandelberger, Film New York Editor With the tabloids on both sides of the Atlantic covering the nasty divorce spat between Italian Prime Minister Silvio Berlusconi and his former-actress wife (a spicy melange of adultery, illicit sex with teenage "models" and political corruption), the Italian penchant for soap opera and high drama continues unabated. Our on-going interest and curiosity about all things Italian c...

Chashama Film Festival

In our quest for a vision we ask ourselves this: If we blended the continents into one entity, what would the ramifications be? If borders were porous, allowing through a free exchange of inspiration, culture, political and religious ideas—what would it look like? Sound like? Feel like? We are here to explore all cultures and hope to show what drives them or where their influence comes from. Opening on October 22, 2009, the second annual chashama Film Festival aims to give us a taste of this global village with its 2009 festival, themed “Festival of the Worlds.” By screening films that voice diverse opinions and present international views, we hope to move us one step further from disassociation in the direction of a unified whole. Our goal is to not only push boundaries, but to erase them. The Festival of the Worlds will provide a forum for global expression, a place for filmmakers and audience members to cultivate a better understanding of their brothers and sisters of different origins. It is a platform for a spectrum of political , sociological and philosophical ideologies presented in an environment designed to foster creative and intellectual expansion. Our goal is to explore both the differences and the similarities of the international community in order to become a more educated population, one that is more capable of avoiding negative historical cycles and more willing to push us into a sustainable future. At last year’s festival, we screened 54 films out of 200+ submissions and reached an audieznce of approximately 500. The festival spanned three days, and included films from Egypt, Switzerland, Greece and the United States. Directors flew in from around the globe to be a part of our festival, and we were honored to give out 15 Victor Awards, 2 of which were audience selections and the rest awarded by deliberation of a panel of 5 judges. Last year’s theme was “Films that other festivals are afraid to show.” This year we are expanding that theme to formalize the global component: films that the world need to see. We expect this year’s festival to reach an audience of over 1000 people in venues that embrace today’s global nature, including museums and international theaters. The festival is designed to cultivate a community of filmmakers who can share, network, and help to build each other’s visions. At chashama, we believe that the art of film and the existence of uncensored, non-corporate media outlets are vital to an informed, compassionate and understanding population. We aim to break away from mass-media caricatures and portrayals of lifestyles that are incongruous with reality or void of critical analysis. What we look for is real feeling, real questions, real ideas. As New Yorkers, we feel it is our responsibility to be on the cutting edge of social and political change and a model for progressive ideas, in this case using film is our medium. At this time of widespread economic and political instability, when the world is breathing for change, for unification and for peace, we know our action is essential. Our action is art. We hope that you will join us in realizing our vision. Sociology In a large area to explore our schedule will be dictated through mirages of these categories.
