For the past four years, Northside Film has partnered with organizations to present some of the best Brooklyn Premieres, repertory picks, documentaries and independent narratives at five unique venues in North Brooklyn: Nitehawk Cinema, Union Docs, Videology, indieScreen and the Wythe Hotel. Past curatorial partners include Magnolia Pictures, IFC, Rooftop Films, Hammer to Nail, IFP, Oscilloscope, Filmmaker Magazine and BAM, among others. Northside Film also includes a DIY Competition in support of local and international independent filmmakers.
As a component of a premier discovery festival, Northside Film provides a platform for both emerging voices in the filmmaking community and established filmmakers who contribute an innovative vision to the craft. We present films in the following buckets: Documentary, Local Filmmakers and Brooklyn Premieres (this includes foreign films and independent narratives making their Brooklyn debut). We place a special emphasis on showcasing the work of LGBTQ filmmakers and incorporating music-centric films into our program.
In 2010 Northside Film introduced the Northside DIY Film Competition for short and feature films. The 2014 Winners will receive a prize package totaling over $10,000 in value, including: complimentary filmmaker services at DCTV, a six-month community membership at the Made in NY Media Center, one year of IFP membership (including access to IFP's resources and a subscription to Filmmaker Magazine), as well as a week pass to the 5-day Filmmaker Conference during Independent Film Week, a cash prize
and special event to celebrate the winning short and feature hosted by Northside.
2014 jurors include: Jury Chair Joana Vicente (Executive Director, IFP), Parker Posey, Ira Sachs (Love Is Strange, Keep the Lights On) Matthew Grady (Founder, Factory 25) and Kentucker Audley (Actor, Ain't Them Bodies Saints and Sun Don't Shine, Founder, NoBudge Films)
Past jurors have included: Rosie Perez, Rajendra Roy (Chief Curator of the Department of Film, MoMA), Patricia Kaufman (Executive Director of the New York State Governor’s Office for Motion Picture and Television Development), Todd P. (DIY Music Curator), Ted Hope (Producer), Ramin Bahrani (Director), Scott Macaulay (Editor, Filmmaker Magazine), Alex Karpovsky (Actor and Director), Terence Nance (Director), Miriam Bale (Critic and Founder, La Di Da Film Festival) and more!
