Half a Million Public Enemies

Director: Daniel Burkholz.

https://vimeo.com/132691432

In 1950, when the Cold War had started, the West German government planned the building of a new army. This project caused huge protests among the war tired population. The government considered the protesters to be public enemies. About 500.000 men, women and children were affected by political persecution, which often was carried out by police men, public prosecutors and judges, who had already been on duty during the Nazi Time. Many activists were thrown into prison, partly for a very long time. Finally the whole political movement was smashed down by a persecution unprecedented in western democracies.

Facing Berlin

Director: Shaune Bordere.

Within ten days of the inauguration of American President John F. Kennedy, he delivers his first State of the Union Address to the world on Communism, the economy and his strategies to prepare the military for the Cold War on January 30, 1961. By June 4th, President Kennedy visits Vienna to meet with Soviet leader Nikita Khrushchev in an attempt to resolve the West Berlin conflict that began during President Dwight Eisenhower's administration. Diplomatic relations further deteriorate and President Kennedy returns to the United States with an increasingly tense level of Communist aggression to solace. Khrushchev quietly plans the construction of the Berlin Wall to force East Germans to remain in the Soviet occupied Eastern Bloc state. President Kennedy provides constant reinforcements to protect democracy and rebuild the economy in West Berlin. In 1963, President Kennedy returns to West Berlin to deliver one of his most emphatic Cold War messages for millions of people to hear.

The Man from U.N.C.L.E., Review: US nephew, Russian nephew, German niece and the sinister Italian plot

The Man from U.N.C.L.E., Review: US nephew, Russian nephew, German niece and the sinister Italian family plot It’s not about a man or the man, and the clever acronym for the secret agent network is a clear reference to Uncle Sam, alias the President of the United States of America, even though United Network Command for Law and Enforcement (UNCLE) is formally created only in the very last shot of the film. Then, again, it is not about Americans only. There’s a Russian KGB man too,...

Director Gabe Polsky Talks Hockey Documentary "Red Army"

Gabe Polsky's Red Army is a winning addition to the scorecard of sports-themed films -- like Moneyball and Foxcatcher -- for people who don't give a whit about sports. With dramatic flair and insightful heft, the documentary digs into Soviet social history through the prism of its triumphant national ice hockey team from the height of the Cold War to the unravelling of the USSR. The star of that team and of Polsky's film, Viacheslav "Slava" Fetisov, became the yo...

Bush was most dangerous president in history: Oliver Stone

user
BANGKOK ~ Oliver Stone said he’d seen the lies of the Reagan administration in the ‘eighties, and how the USA had intervened in 60 or 70 countries, but nothing had prepared him for the Bush years. “This has been the worst decade of my life” Stone told reporters in Bangkok yesterday. The film-maker, in Thailand to deliver a series of talks organised by the International Peace Foundation, said “Bush was the most dangerous president in history,” because of his policy on ...
