Bullet Train, Review: Brad luck Pitt

Bullet Train, Review: Brad luck Pitt A Japanese book adapted into an American film, with Brad Pitt in the leading role, set on a high speed train, with armed and dangerous Mafia agents and gangsters on board, seems to be the menu for a high-octane entertainer. And for once, a film delivers most of what it promises. It is a quaint mix of mayhem, mirth and thrills. Bullet Train re-works the gangster genre with a twist that is so obvious that you wonder why did nobody think of it before. And tha...

Dealt a taste of Durban weather

I saw one of the best crime thrillers that I've ever seen last night and visited Taste of Durban, a food festival presented outdoors in the pouring rain.  Durbanites huddled under their umbrellas while sampling food and wine. That reminds me, I'm seeing a Swedish documentary about food porn called Foodies today. I could only take competing for a dry seat, hiding under umbrellas, getting rain in my Thai food and having my ale diluted for so long and headed for the scr...

New York Lauds Godard with Awesome Retrospective

Fifty years ago this fall, from September 10-19, 1963, the first New York Film Festival was held. The cinema world was different in those days. In an era before home video and DVDs, the few venues for film fanatics to see non-mainstream or foreign films were repertory cinemas, college film societies or festivals. The top grossing film that year was Cleopatra, starring Elizabeth Taylor and Richard Burton. And although Beatlemania had reached a critical mass in Britain, the band had yet to conqu...

The first stop in this series is Switzerland where musical heritage is being preserved, cultivated and passed down from generation to generation. DETROIT, WILD CITY

Director: Florent Tillon.
The automobile industry jumpstarted Detroit’s rise and made it the most industrialized city in the United States. But because of changes in American society and population demographics, the city lay deserted for decades and urban prairies complete with falcon, deer and coyote turning out the urban landscape in a B movie setting. Now an unexpected turn of events has created an environment where young people are moving back into the ruins of the former Detroit... are they a new kind of pioneer? Could this now be a way for America to be “rediscovered”?
