Oscars
by Quendrith Johnson, Los Angeles Correspondent
In the run up to Sunday, March 27, which is known as Oscar Sunday, we thought it would be fun to join the guessing gang from The Academy. All you have to do is name the actual movie from the Working Title. All this in the company of Questlove (Summer Of Soul), Maggie Gyllenhaal (The Lost Daughter), Andrew Garfield (tick, tick...BOOM!) and 94th Academy Awards Executive Producers Shayla Cowan & Will Packer. Plus Dan Lausten & Luis Se...
Parallel Mothers, Review: Swapped babies and a Spanish history lesson from the Master
Expectations suddenly rise when the name Pedro Almodóvar is mentioned. One regrets having missed the screening at IFFI, November 2021, but then Impact Films, Mumbai, of Ashwani Sharma, acquires distribution rights of Parallel Mothers, for India, and holds a press screening at Soho, in Juhu, Bombay, a small but exotic theatre, fixes its release on 11 March 2022, and invites you to catch-up on what you ...

The Academy of Motion Pictures Arts and Sciences (AMPAS) sent out a notice to remind us entertainment journalists to use only their official list of nominees. Which begs the question, who flubbed the list previously? (Double-take not required, lol.)
But those are insider thoughts as the 94th Nominee Show from The Academy flickered onto small screens, from handhelds to tablets, this morning with about a 10 minute delay from the original 5:18 am ...

'Congratulations to Searchlight Pictures for NOMADLAND that just swept the 93rd Oscars with Best Picture, Best Director, and Best Actress.’ You can hear the echo of the celebrations (however low-key) last night after the telecast beamed ‘round the world, online and on Zoom. But what was this Oscar year really about? You had the Pandemic, the economic contraction brought on by lockdowns, almost everything was influenced by thi...

One of the best Oscar categories to enter is the short subject for film, insiders say, because there are less entries and the field is still wide open for newcomers worldwide. Whether this is true or not can only be tested by entering your short, however there is a great way to find out what the nominated films look like for 2021. ShortsTV is displaying a slate of combined films for digital and theatrical release on April 2.

It’s not enough that this Award Season 2021 went virtual right out of the gate due to the Pandemic? But the Academy actually decided that the foreboding Ides of March, or March 15, would be an auspicious date for the Nominations Announcement for the 93rd Oscar Presentation. Who knows what else will happen on show date April 25, 2021. That’s where we find ourselves in the Year of COVID, where even the things we count on go awry.

30-Year Industry Veteran, Jeff Kitchen, Explains
the Art, Craft, and Business of Bankable Scriptwriting
By Vic Gerami
Alfred Hitchcock said, “To make a great film you need three things—the script, the script and the script.” But to craft the blueprint for a movie, TV show, or stage play is much harder than most people think. More special effects, gunplay, car chases, or laughs can enhance a good script, but by themselves they’re nothing. A script...
MFF 21, 02: Fernando Meirelles to get Excellence in Cinema Award
"My deepest thanks to MAMI and the Mumbai Film Festival for this honour. As a director who makes his home on the opposite side of the world from where this festival takes place, I am humbly reminded that cinema is the perfect conduit for people to recognise and celebrate our shared humanity. I have strived to convey in my films an understanding between people who do not seem to have anything in common. To show that we have...

Today, a familiar face left the Hollywood landscape as TCM host Robert Osborne, 84, died on Monday Mar.6, 2017. But he was much more than just another talking head about movies and movie stars. Osborne came to Tinsel Town from “off the farm,” as he recounted when we spoke about the Oscars history in 2011.
Instead of penning a typical tribute, here’s a real inside look back at a man whose work in show business lives on. Ironical...
by Quendrith Johnson, Los Angeles Correspondent Selfie from THE LAST WORD cast.
Never start a headline with a bad pun, and never write your own obit might be two unwritten rules of journalism, but in new movie THE LAST WORD, starring Shirley MacLaine and Amanda Seyfried, a lot of rules are broken so let’s skip the logline and go straight to the press conference at The Four Seasons Hotel in Beverly Hills. The timing is key here, because this takes place, Friday, March, 3, in the wake of M...

Something Emma Stone says in an off-hand way when she and Ryan Gosling pick up the Outstanding Performers of the Year from Santa Barbara International Film Festival (SBIFF) on Friday night really sticks. Seated beside Gosling, her co-star and co-nominee for the acting Oscars in LA LA LAND, Stone plays with the 20’s fringe on her dress, then offers this insight: “movies make us feel less alone, I guess, that’s what they...

On Thursday night, when Denzel Washington is finally presented with his Leonard Maltin Masters Award at Santa Barbara International Film Festival, the award hand-off is done by a little girl from the cast of FENCES, in which he stars and directs. This is the movie that has him Oscar-nominated along with co-star Viola Davis, who gives what can only be called a go-to-God, heart-stopping performance. Saniyya Sidney, age 11, presents the honor with ...

Okay, so that headline lyric is actually from Frank Sinatra about Luck being a Lady, and frankly that’s just one misconception about women that the movie 20TH CENTURY WOMEN hopes to debunk. That and every notion of gender from conception to girl power to the male gaze to reproduction. This movie is not a “chick flick,” shall we say, but it is a flick about chicks/women/girls, and every other representation of — stealing f...

During Award Season when Hollywood has the limelight, and this includes every major guild and member-based award show up until the 89th Oscars on Sunday, Feb. 26, there is a shopworn practice of splitting the Nominations announcements in the news, setting up anticipation for several different dates for the same organization. For example, today Jan. 11, the Directors Guild of America (DGA) announced its TV, Commercial and Documentary Nominees, wi...

Siraj Syed’s IFFI 2016 diary, V: And the Oscar for restoring classics goes to…AMPAS!
American body Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences (AMPAS) is best known for presenting the annual awards, which are characterised by a figurine called the Oscar. Though that is the face of the academy, it does much more service to the cause of both American and international cinema than most people would imagine, including holding an annual student Oscars.

Oscar Dozen: What this reviewer said about the winners
1.Best supporting actor
WINNER: JK Simmons for Whiplash
“J.K. Simmons (Break Point, JOBS, Dark Skies, The Words, long-running white-supremacist villain on HBO’s Oz) is devilish and supremely sadistic. He too is a musician and has been a conductor, which shows. Watch him terrify you and keep you rivetted in the second half of the film.”
2. Achievement in makeup and hairstyling
