Shantaram, remains the driving force, as does Sudhir Nandgaonkar, journalist and a bunch of teenage students pool in their res...

29th.istanbul international short film festival

Istanbul International Short Film Festival is the longest running and most experienced organization among the international short film festivals in Turkey.

Short film is a medium based on making best of limited time within the frame of cinema art and gives the directors the opportunity of expressing their talents in the most unique way. The In this perspective the Festival aims to support short film and to provide young filmmakers to present their work both on national and international platforms.

The Festival had been started by a group of young enthusiasts on national level and showcased only films produced in Turkey. In years it has attracted a big interest and became an international organization in 1988.

As an un-interrupted organization of 38 years, the Festival is a unique example of its kind.

The Festival is organized each November and through its one-week-course around 200 distinguished short films from Turkey and the world are screened to filmlovers. Experienced filmmakers, professionals share their experiences through Q&A's and workshops.

Until today, around 5400 short films have been screened, 1150 guests have attended the festival, 550 Q&A's and 33 workshops have been organized.

The international section consists of only film screenings; there is no competition within this section. Films are selected through a process of focused evaluation process from both the direct applications and also from the films provided by film centers of different countries. These films are being presented to the audience with Turkish subtitles in three different theaters where the directors are ready for an Q&A afterwards.

Festival catalogues of each year provide an important reference for cinematic memory.

This organization is being run by an independent committee where Hilmi Etikan acts as the president and keeps it's respectable profile throughout the years.

After his graduation, he drifts to Bosnia to help with the discovery of dead bodies from the mass graves. Zrinka is a Serbian-Bosnian psychologist helps people with post-war suicide syndrome. They meet on the Mostar Bridge while she considers committing suicide. Mysterious nature of Bunyamin attracts her. Zrinka tries to help him to be released from his qualms of conscience, but despite of all her efforts, Bunyamin doesn’t share the terrific childhood incident with her. After completing his job in the ICMP, (International Commission on Missing Persons), he returns to Turkey to face his brother to deserve Zrinka’s love. While waiting for his return patiently, one day, Zrinka sees that something bad happens to him in her dream. She follows her instincts and begins a journey through Turkey to help him and find an answer to her love. In Hasankeyf, instead of what she expects, she finds another truth and the true love. This isn’t a straight-forward love story; it’s a tale of love, death and the healing of three lost hearts. It is pure reality drenched in dreams.

La Mer de la Tranquilité / The Sea of Tranquility

Director: Antoon Cox.
In the first half of the 20th century, La Louvière was a prosperous mining town in Belgium. Today, more than three decades after the closing of the last mine, this same place is generally known as a grim town famous for its high unemployment rates. Still, to those who are willing to look beyond the statistics, this town reveals its beauty. In particular, this documentary shows a multicultural and convivial dream come true. The two main protagonists (see picture) mama Jeanne from Congo and Pierre (see picture) from France mount a terril (slag heap) and discover the beauty of their habitat. Comming from the Congo Mama mounts the terril in a typical African dress and high heels. The little mountain reminds her of Congo. At the summit treats the local population to blazed bananas and Chicken Moambe. The party at the summit depicts well the diversity of this town with the Africans to be the latest immigrants after the Italians, the Turks. Towards the end they are all surprised by the resurrection of singer Claude François, the French singing legend who passed away in an accident just a few years after La Louvière's last mine was closed down.
