I was inspired greatly by meeting with Ryuichi Sakamoto and hearing music of cinema and art, something like a soundtrack for a film, only one note #C Sharp describes him best.

INTERVIEW: Nima Javidi, director of Melbourne, Opening Film of Venice71 Critics Week
Director Nima Javidi opened this year's Critics Week at the 71st Venice Film Festival with his debut feature Melbourne, telling the story of a couple in contemporary Iran whose planned migration to Melbourne is prevented by an unfortunate event few hours before departure. Javidi is the director of six short films and two documentaries. He is mainly known in Iran for his work on televisioncomm...
Numerous plastic bags filled with clothes and personal objects are drained until the very last airdrop is lost and their entire content appears withered, even more soulless than in its actual state. As the opening credits roll down, this stylistic symbol unpacks an array of thoughts and interpretations.
We are transferred to a simple, but modern apartment in Tehran. A couple is packing. Amir (Payman Maadi) and Sara’s (Negar Javaherian) belongings, their lives and future are about ...
Hungry hearts, dir. Saverio Costanzo, Italy 2014 Venezia71
An Italian girl and an American boy meet accidentally in a Chinese restaurant in New York. The amusement of the first conversation is a corny, lighthearted lead to their upcoming future as a couple. Giving you a plain dose of a typical love story, Hungry hearts tricks you with its misleading rom-com opening, giving an under the belt punch with what's about to follow.

The main prize, the Golden Lion, went to Sacro Gra by Gianfranco Rosi, while Best Director went to one of the hottest titles from the festival, Miss Violence, and director Alexandros Avranas.
The Grand Jury prize prize went to Tsai Ming-liang for Stray Dogs which had been tipped by critics to win prizes here despite...
Celebrating its 70th anniversary, the Venice Film Festival is in full swing this weekend. As one of the world's most prestigious annual events for filmmakers and cinema fans around the world, winning an award or having one's film selected to screen here would be a very satisfying accomplishment for any director. But to receive a lifetime achievement award AND have your latest film make its world premiere at the festival is an honor reserved for a very select few.
But Andrzej Wajda c...

Jerzy Skolimowski is a busy man these days. The Polish director's latest film Essential Killing made headlines this autumn when it won the Special Jury Prize at the Venice Film Festival, and the film's lead, Vincent Gallo, took the prize for best actor. The film was released in Poland in October, and audiences have been filling cinemas to see what is admittedly a unique film in terms of story and style. In the following interview, Mr. Skolimowski discusses the origins of the film, the funding ...
Sofia Coppola walked away with the top prize at the Venice Film Festival this past weekend, winning the Golden Lion for her new film SOMEWHERE. The film, which inexplicably did not make the cut at the Toronto or New York film festivals (festival envy?), stars Stephen Dorff and Elle Fanning in a dramatic story of a father who tries to connect with his daughter after years of neglect. The fact that the dad is also a famous actor adds spice to this satire of Hollywood's self-obession and...
"Road to Nowhere," the independent motion picture filmed last year in Western North Carolina, will premiere at the prestigious Venice Film Festival in Italy, which is scheduled September 1-11. The film is one of 19 selected to represent the United States, along with others by such notable directors as Martin Scorsese, Sofia Coppola, Ben Affleck and the late Dennis Hopper.
"Road to Nowhere" was directed by indie film guru Monte Hellman, and wr...

SOMEWHERE (Sofia Coppola)
The world premieres are coming strong and fast for the Fall film season as the Venice Film Festival has announced a particularly stellar competition section. For North Americans not making the trip to the Lido, many of these films will receive their North American premieres at the Toronto Film Festival a week later in September (the two festivals actually overlap for a few days on the first weekend of September).
Twenty-two films have been set to ...
Monday, September 8--------Goodbye Solo, the latest film from New York writer/director Ramin Bahrani, has won the prestigious FIPRESCI International Critics Prize at the Venice Film Festival, which just concluded this past weekend. The film makes its North American debut this evening at the Toronto International Film Festival.I caught the press screening of the film yesterday, and I will go out on a limb and say that this is one of the best and most emotionally deep films of the Festival.
