 Description

Matei lives in a post-industrial part of Transylvania. The mines here were closed a long time ago, and everything plunges in stagnation; the old, grey, and empty buildings are haunting the streets. The boy’s parent – in search of work – left for Italy. Matei, despite the fact that he lives with his grandfather, is very lonely. He is fascinated with insects. The boy devotes hours to examine books and drawings; sometimes he pretends he is a cowboy, and from time to time he meets his schoolmate. One day, the boys destroy a car together, and their deed almost immediately comes to light. Matei runs away from home, and wanders the streets. When he comes back, nothing is how it used to be.

Shown at the festival in Rotterdam, this poetic movie about growing up alone is based on a true story of a homeless boy whose life was documented by the director. A beautiful from the formal side (everything is filmed in winter, and the camera often observes the events from air), intelligent and touching movie raises the very contemporary matter of childhood without parents.

Justification:

“We have decided to distinguish two entirely different movies from different parts of the world. The thing that they have in common, is the effectiveness of the producers in acquiring regional funds for difficult projects, as well passion and courage in taking up complicated and still up-to-date topics.”
