Sales Support for 39 European films at Toronto

39 European films benefit from Film Sales Support at the Toronto International Film Festival, 6-15 September 2007

26 different European sales agents and production companies are receiving EFP’s established Film Sales Support (FSS) for the promotion of 39 films at this year’s Toronto International Film Festival. For the third year in succession, FSS, which is backed by the MEDIA Programme of the European Union, is helping to increase the visibility of European films outside of Europe by encouraging the sales companies to invest in their promotional activities at this most important event on the annual festival calendar.

The supported films account for a third of the festival’s European programme. The repertoire includes 10 French, four German, four Danish, two British and five Spanish films as well as films from various other European countries, for example from Eastern Europe. One Bulgarian, one Romanian, one Polish, two Czech and two Hungarian films will benefit from FSS. Amongst the bulk of feature films, there are two documentaries, The Mosquito Problem and Other Stories (Andrey Paounov) and Algeria, Unspoken Stories (Jean-Pierre Lledo), as well as one animation film, Nocturna (Victor Maldonado & Adrià Garcia).

Half of the supported films are celebrating their World Premiere at Toronto, such as the Norwegian Gone with the Woman (Petter Naess), Silent Resident (Christian Frosch) from Austria, Battle for Haditha (Nick Broomfield) and It’s A Free World … (Ken Loach) from the UK and the Danish Just Like Home (Lone Scherfig).

The following directors are travelling to Toronto with the help of FSS: Claude Chabrol (A Girl Cut in Two), Carlos Saura (Fados), Manoel de Oliveira (Christopher Columbus – The Enigma), Béla Tarr (The Man From London), Julio Medem (Chaotic Ana), Lone Scherfig (Just Like Home), Silvio Soldini (Days and Clouds), Victor Maldonado and Adrià Garcia (Nocturna), Jirí Vejdelek (Roming), Michelange Quay (Eat, For This Is My Body), Jacob Thuesen (Erik Nietzsche, The Early Years) and Hiner Saleem (Beneath The Rooftops of Paris).

As in previous years, EFP offers a European Umbrella Stand which is located at the festival’s Sales & Industry Office at the Sutton Place Hotel displaying promotional material.
